First, congrats on the runner up finish. I think you'd be wiser to choose the range finder. Maybe thats my choice speaking its mind. A new stick be it whatever you've got in your sights can improve your game in many ways. Possibly a confidence boost, or an increase in fairway percentages even. It's been my experience with a range finder, that finding a correct yardage to a target is worth more in terms of scoring than playing a new driver.

first find out if you will get pin sheets at all your college tournaments and if so get the skycaddie. I have a bushnell pinseeker ann like it alot. Used to think the bushnell was much better than the skycaddie then my grandpa bought one. It is so nice to know front yardage when there is a deep bunker short the of green and your in-between clubs and same for the back yardage.

Can you use GPS for competitions? I thought it was only the rangefinder that were allowed with approval by the tournament comittee.

if i get a pin sheet, i can measure to the pin then subtract the yardage on the pin sheet. I just have found sky caddies to be less accurate.

i also checked the ncaa ruling and it is a local rule, but my teammates said the majority of the tournaments you may use them, and if you can't, they save your butt when you play your practice round.

Im going to a div II school in PA and my coach told me (im a freshman) that were NOT allowed to use rangefinders in competition...

Although itll still be worth it as I do alot of prep for tourneys making my own sheets with the range finder and my camera.

So for preparation (if your that kind of player), its a priceless tool, but if your a kind of player that just looks at the pinsheet and goes fw/grns all day long and dont worry about the details as much, go for the FT-i.

I double checked on using them on competition, and the NCAA said it is a local rule, which basically means it is up to the hosting team.

Its all about what kinda player you are for prep right. If your a feel player and dont go through all those little details before hand id say go with the FT-i. But if you like meticulous preparation go with the range finder.

Theres already extrememyl good chances that someone else on the team will have one already too.

It pretty much depends on how you prepare for courses if it's worth the money to you, if your not that meticulous about seeing where EVERYTHING is when your prepping for a course, odds are very good that you'll be given pin sheets every day, so if you think you'd use it enough to get the use out of it. I personally dont know more than 5 other jr/collegiate players who like to prepare as methodically as I do (like charting an entire course), whereas the extra driver could give you boosts of confidence when one isnt working as well.

From my understanding of your game (obv very limited), the driver may help you a little more than the range finder, but again, its all up to you, either way its profit in your pocket, so you really cant go wrong with either decision.

That would be cool. Unfortunately I no longer live in Riverside but I am not that far from there (San Diego) and I would like to get back up there to play again. When I went to UCR I used to play moreno valley/yuciapa/champions OR legends @ pga/ and for nightly practice the course down the street from the mission inn near downtown. I actually prefer the courses in riverside more than the courses here in san diego because there is alot more variety of courses there. Well let me know and maybe we can set something up.

Our home courses are PGA, Oak Valley, Victoria, Canyon Crest, Goose Creek, and Moreno Valley Ranch. We play the ranch the most during school, just because its a good place to practice (used to host a nike tour event). The hardest course is Oak Valley, which is where we host our tournament. They set it up harder than the 2nd stage of Q school last year which was also hosted there.
