Atlanta Trip

I’m flying down to Atlanta on Memorial Day to play 4 club Corp courses with a buddy who won it at a silent auction. I was wondering what other public courses we could play while we are down there. The 4 courses we are playing are Atlanta National GC, Manor Golf and CC, Country Club of the South and White Columns Golf and CC. I would prefer to stay close to these courses and not drive to far. I believe we have up to 3 other rounds we could possibly fit into our schedule. Sorry for the short notice but would love some recommendations this weekend.

Echelon comes to mind; see if one of the pros can make a call to get you on Hawks Ridge. Other public courses will be a let down compared to what you already have on the docket.

Good selection of hotels relativley close, look for those located on: 1) Mansell Road; 2) Old Milton Parkway; 3) Winward Parkway.

Are you flying in on Monday? When are you heading back north?

We fly in Monday morning and play Atlanta National GC around 1:30. Tuesday we have a tee time for around the same time but don’t know which course then Wednesday and Thursday we have tee times around 8:30 then we fly out Thursday around 10:30 pm. Thanks for the hotel suggestions but the package also has us staying a villas at 2 of the courses, not sure which ones.

I started to look on here and saw some people mention River Pines and Wolf Creek. Are those worth a shot?

I also just looked at the forecast and they are calling for rain every day we are down there from that tropical storm coming up. Hopefully that isn’t an all day rain everyday.

Forgot about River Pines, not a bad track, but it's been too long since I've played it to offer any technicolor. Might want to look at Woodmont as it's within striking distance.

Wolf Creek is near the airport, save it for Thursday. You don't want to ping pong from the Northside down to Wolf Creek, then back North after playing. Unless you enjoy traffic.

I'll keep my fingets crossed for you on the weather.

Your primary list of 4 are great choices, play all of them regularly. Each will give you a different challenge. Highly recommend Echelon if you have time. The course is long, firm and fast with many elevation changes that makes it very challenging. A few short notes on each:

The Manor is a Tom Watson designed course, firm and fast. Bent greens, Bermuda with not much rough. Many elevation changes.

White Columns is a Tom Fazio design that plays long, Bent green and Bermuda. I characterize it as a forced carry, not firm and fast.

Atlanta National is a Pet Dye design with everything that comes with his name. Very challenging and a shot makers course. Bent greens and Zoyia fairways.

Country Club of South is a Jack Nickolas course, bent greens and Bermuda. Not as challenging as others but a good track, well maintained.

Echelon is a Rees Jones design with many elevations changes, uneven lies and long par 5's. Bent greens and Bermuda, firm and fast. 7000+ yards

Thanks for the info. So far we’ve played Atlanta and White Columns. I loved both courses. They were in good shape considering all the rain they’ve had recently.

We are playing Manor tomorrow morning and then we have to check in at CC of the South and was hoping to play another round around there tomorrow afternoon. Is River Pines any good since it’s right next to CC of the South? We play CC of the South Thursday morning and then we might try to replay there again before we fly out. If we can’t play CC of the South twice what other courses are nice around there? Thanks again for the tips.

Laurel Springs is close to CCOS. I'd skip River Pines. Quirky layout, conditions are hit or miss. Polo is also close. Olde Atlanta and Windermere as well, but both are packed all day every day. There's also Bears Best. I'm not a fan but would play it over River Pines any day.

Polo will be extra wet, as it sits in a flood plain (I'm a member).

Laurel springs is a good option. Maybe Brookfield?
