Question about driver shaft

So over this past weekend I went for a driver fitting and got fit into a diamana w series shaft etc, the fitter wanted me to buy it from them which would cost $450 all in (def not doing that), I was able to find a few uncut shafts online but they are all 46 in and I was fit into 45.5. They also do not have adapters on them. How difficult would it to buy the shaft, and the adapter and have someone assemble it for me, would the PGA superstore be able to do something like this? Would it yield the same results as if I bought it all as one. Also where would I get an adapter?

It's something that's fairly basic that any competent club builder could handle. And it shouldn't be all that expensive. Now whether one considers the builders at the PGA superstore competent or not is a different question.

 

Most adapters can be found at places like golfworks.com or Billy Bob's Golf (online) or even on ebay (if you know what to look for and what to avoid). Not all club manufacturers sell their adapters separately but even for those cases, there are generally solid aftermarket options available instead.

 

A couple of side notes:

 

Don't confuse the cut (or uncut) shaft length with the playing length. Since the head extends beyond the tip of the shaft, for a 45.5" playing length, most drivers would need a cut shaft length of between 43.5" to 44" (that doesn't include any amount the adapter extends beyond the shaft tip). The specific head model will determine the specific amount needed.

 

Not sure I'd consider anyone who 'fit' a 20+ handicap into a 45.5" driver to be much of a fitting. There are always exceptions but that's generally considered way too long for the majority of amateurs - even low handicappers. Did they even give you the opportunity to try shorter playing lengths? Did they check the quality of your face impact consistency with impact tape or foot powder spray?

Thank you for your response, my handicap has actually dropped since I originally posted that and the guy who fit me is probably the best in the area. He had me try and 8 different shafts including different lengths of the same shaft

I found online a 44.25 grip to tip do you think that would be too short? I know everyone is different just asking your opinion. Thanks

It depends on a couple things:

 

1) does that 'grip to tip' include the adapter (does the shaft have an adapter on it) and if so which manufacturers adapter?

2) what make/model head are you planning to play the shaft in?

3) even the type of grip could make a difference compared to the type of grip you plan on using.

 

For the majority of answers it likely will be OK but there could be a few combinations in which the worst case is that it might end up 1/4" or 1/8" short.

I don't think it's too much to worry about with the length in all honest I'll probably benefit from the short length. Will it effect swing weight or stiffness anything though?

Is it a Callaway adapter on the shaft? If so, it adds about 5/8" to the cut shaft length. So that would leave about 43-5/8".

 

Sorry, not sure about what the BBGM of the epic heads are. Based on past Callaway heads, likely either 1.5" or 1.75" so playing length could be between 45-1/8" to 45-5/8".
