Looking for course suggestions I. Northern WV/Pittsburgh area.

I’m flying out to Pittsburgh for a golf weekend in a couple weeks. Visiting my cousin who is in Davis WV on a 6 month job. Looking for good course suggestions around that area within a couple hours.

Thanks!

Lodestone in McHenry MD (Deep Creek lake area) is a beautiful mountaintop course. You have Mystic Rock at Nemacolin Woodlands a little further up in PA.

Nemacolin was one we were looking at. Stonewall, Oglebay as well. Just trying to find out the best options in the area.

I enjoy the Palmer Course at Oglebay. There is lots of elevation change which makes for some fun shots. Course conditions have been good when I have been there in the past, but I haven't been there so far this year. You can also snag some good deals off of GolfNow fairly often.

Other quality options in the area would include the following (although they are in different regions of the greater Pittsburgh area):

Quicksilver

Cranberry Highlands

Totterridge

Birdsfoot

Thanks for the options. Have looked at quicksilver and that’s a possibility. Totteridge looks good as well. The others are a little short.

Really looking for the longest and toughest around with great condition.

Are you going to be in staying in Pittsburgh or with your cousin in Davis? If you are meeting somewhere in between or driving from Davis the choices that best fit your description would have to be Lodestone or Nemacolin. Nemacolin used to host a tour stop back in the day (84 Lumber Classic) on Mystic Rock and Shepard's Rock is a nice course to, plus all the other activities you could do at the resort. If you go to Lodestone, stop by and play a fun 9 at Thousand Acres after. Mountain State Brewing, which brews in Thomas, has a place next to Lodestone too.

Nowwww, if you really have connections (they better be good) and want the longest and toughest course you could play, Pikewood is the obvious answer hands down. It is my favorite course to play in the area when I'm around there, and just one of my favorite courses period. 7,649 from the tips 155 slope and 78.9 course rating, you wont find anything longer or tougher around.

Current agenda is to fly into Pittsburgh Friday evening and hit the casino. Saturday early round will be totteridge and then trek over to Nemacolin mystic rock before going down to Davis. Sunday we are thinking we’d stay around Davis area and do snowshoe at ravens club and another but those aren’t set it stone. Head back up towards Pittsburgh and do maybe lodestone or quicksilver before flying out at 5pm Monday.

You'll love Mystic. Great free practice area so go as early before your tee time as you want. Birdsfoot, trashed, slow and WAY overrated. Played there a few weeks ago. Heard it used to be nice but it's not anymore. Choice of food is basically 2 sizes of hot dog or cold sandwich lol. Totterridge should be a good choice if your looking for a challenge. It was a more than a little beat up when i played it Monday though. They also have a great practice area for $5 with golf. An absolutely great course, and its not far from Mystic, 45 min. north maybe, is Linden Hall. I play there at least once a week. Not hard or easy but IMHO the best public course around. Reasonable rates, great layout and views. I've only seen better course conditions at Mystic and not by much. Please post your opinions of the courses, especially Quicksilver as I have not played that one yet.

Loadstone- especially early in the season (If you want to make the drive, I highly recommend. I've played mystic rock probably 30 times and it really isn't anything phenomenal for the price. Palmer at oglebay is alright. Totteridge for $50 dollars is good. Quicksilver is relatively close to the airport. Pittsburgh is great from a private club perspective and the public courses are alright.
