when playing in gale force winds

located in one of the most remote parts of ireland in belmullet bay

didn't get an exact wind reading but winds were classified as a gale which means they were blowing at least 39 to 46 miles per hour with short but severe squals every 25 minutes or so

that same day in england there were reports of tornados because of the strong gale force winds coming out of the north and causing havoc in ireland and the u.k.



this is one of the par 3's on the back nine and you can see the tee box in the distance surrounded by a mesh fence - the waves crashing into the beach were unreal and the pic doesn't do justice to how severe the conditions were

I was expecting to see the flagstick bent over so it's only 3' off the ground!

I played in that and the wind was like 6 clubs!

 

Most guys I know hat super windy days, but I think it's a blast...

You're not going to post a personal best score, but it's sure fun grinding it out and seeing what you can post in those conditions!

luckily it wasn't a 6 club wind for me that day - i would say about a 4 club wind but when the rain came in short 5 min spells the wind picked up tremendously and you had to stop playing and seek shelter under an umbrella all the while doing your best to keep the umbrella from collapsing

I love it when the wind is that bad that you have to take into consideration how the ball is going to be affected by the wind on the green and chipping ;). When you hit a 2m draw when you're only getting the ball at the most a metre high in the air, you know it is a windy day.

I can Imagine what a strong breeze up there would be like. very similar to ballybunion, where I used to caddy when I was young. The breeze would skin the b*lls off a brass monkey !!!!

Gustbuster Umbrella! A bit pricey but works wonders....haven't had it collapse on me yet!

You could probably hang onto it outside your car on the freeway an it still wouldn't collapse!

I palyed Carne links in the first week of October 2008 - a beautiful and well designed course.

 

But man was it WINDY ; we had great difficulty in trying to open the car doors when we arrived in the parking lot. I know that wind is part of the experience of links golf, but this wind was so strong that you had considerable difficulty trying to stay upright while trying to swing the club.

 

That said, I hope to go back to Carne someday to play it when it is only moderately windy.

I love playing in bad weather. It's some of the most carefree rounds I ever have. You just go out and play, not worrying about a score and think your way around the course.

Carne is a wonderful course. I played three rounds there a few years ago on a solo golfing trip to Ireland. It was one of the highlights. I had decent weather- though decent included gale force winds at times and about 10 minutes of hail during one round! I loved every second of it. When I was there, they were just starting construction on a new nine holes- some the members weren't all that keen on it. Can you give me a report about where that stands now? Thanks.
