arms deep---more upright

at the top of my swing my arms normally get quite deep resulting in me being flat, i think this had something to do with me taking the club outside at the takeaway then it gradually flattened out.

now...i want to get more upright, im trying to take the club more inside the just like feeling as though the club goes straight up towards the sky to get more upright but im not having much luck so far.

any ideas?

anybody?? please its killing me. my left arm just hets sucked infront of my chest, i cant keep it out infront of my body. thanks

Not sure about the 'arms deep' comment but my 15-yr. old son had a similiar problem with being too flat and he's started making a more upright- almost 3/4 backswing as his 'waggle' a la Mike Weir or Chris Dimarco and that's helped.

Add me to the list of folks who don't know what "deep" means here... Anyway...

I don't think taking the club inside gets you more upright. If anything, I'd say it gets your swing even more flat. Think about it: If you have the proper spine tilt toward the ball, then taking the club head back more along the target line HAS to get you more upright (if it were possible to trace the target line the entire backswing, then the club would be perfectly straight up and down, or the opposite of flat). If you take the club inside (taking it to the extreme here) immediately, then it HAS to wrap around your body, and will make your swing completely flat.

If your arm is stuck to your chest on the way back, then you're either 1) not bending at the hip joints and rotating around your spine, or 2) taking the club back with only your arms, and are not turning your shoulder away from the ball so that your back faces the target.

But, either way, I'd say that taking the club back inside is going to make the arms-stuck-to-your-chest problem even worse.

Based on your added pictures, you have a great backswing from a plane perspective. I wish I could get my hands deep and my left arm along the shoulder plane at the end-backswing position - like you. I think that you are in the perfect end-backswing position. I have no idea why you want to be steeper.

It is true that you start your takeaway with your clubshaft too far outside the toe line by the end-takeaway position. However, you seem to have the ability to get on a perfect plane in the mid-backswing and your butt end of the club points at the ball-target line when your left arm is parallel to the ground. That's a perfect position and I wouldn't worry about the takeaway being less than perfect. As long as you can get to a good end-backswing position, that's all that counts. Your end-backswing position is as goos as these PGA tour players - Faldo, Woods, Els, McNary. You look like Mike McNary.

A few thoughts as I have a similar problem. I'm no pro but here is what has been suggested to me.

1. At the top get the right forearm matching the spine angle. Work on that in front of a mirror.

2. The Leadbetter wall drill. At the top you can't get it laid off as you will hit the wall.

3. Get on an Explanar (that semi-circular training aid). With the Explanar you simply cannot get it laid off or behind you because the club/roller goes on a pre-set plane.

Quick question though. What does your teacher/pro say about all this because I honestly think your swing has a lot of good qualities and you are obviously an accomplished player?

Good luck with it. If you want to trade swings I will swap in a heartbeat!!

well i will have more room when more upright, i feel very trapped especially with things like my driver. id like it either alot more upright or more liek tigers, thanks for the advice so far tho.

also if anyone has any tips of what they feel to start the downswing this will be appreciated, not just saying things like weight shift. many thanks.

Looks like you are slouching at address. Try keeping your chin up more, this should straighten up the top part of your body maiking it more up right (like you are sitting down and you are looking at something level to your eyes).

Also, upon takeaway, don't hinge your wrist immediately. When you start takeaway, make an effort to hold your wrist angle as if it were still at address for as long as you can during the shoulder turn, it will eventually hinge itself. The early wrist hinging may be causing your forearm to roll which will bring your plane flatter. :good:

I'm not seeing a lot of "slouching" at address, to be honest. Picture 1 looks to be an ideal setup position with fine posture.

I cannot see a significant problem in the takeaway either. Pictures 2 and 3 are practically textbook. I disagree that there is any exaggerated rolling of the forearms on the backswing. The only quibble that I have is that perhaps the club may be a little outside the line of the hands in Picture 2. If the club were to come back a tiny bit more inside on an arc, that might be ok. But this is nothing significant.

HOWEVER, Medici999, I think you're nuts, honestly. You've got pretty much a textbook backswing, turn, and position at the top. The one thing that I see that I don't like is your exaggerated arching of the back just before impact (the last picture). I would say that perhaps this is where you feel crowded and it may be related to your lower body turn on the downswing/through impact. Looks like you are trying to post up on the left leg, which is good, but it's hard to see much hip clearing near impact. Ideally, you'd like to start seeing "daylight" between your knees in your last picture. So, perhaps a swing thought to try out (see if it works, if not discard it) would be focusing on clearing your hips early and fully...pointing your belt buckle to the target just after impact. Alternatively (or relatedly?) perhaps you are trying so hard to be more upright that your setting up a little closer than normal and you are getting crowded at impact? Just a few thoughts. In the end, I still think you're nuts cause you've got a great swing. Perhaps you are getting a wee bit too analytical?

I'm looking at the red lines in Figures 3 and 5. They don't quite line up with the shaft (held a ruler to the screen). Figure 3 actually looks very good as the red line if drawn straight off the shaft is going right through the ball. Figure 5, however is actually outside the target line. I think this is where you are feeling you want to be more vertical, but you can get this with the club alone. It's hard to see, but it looks like your left shoulder may be dipping between Figures 2 and 5, or you are slouching as seen in Figure 6. Also, look how straight your legs got in Figure 6 compared to Figure 1. My suspicion is that your take-away plane is near perfect, but you are slouching slightly and straightening your legs. Your lower body (hips and knees) should probably fire a bit sooner, and maybe a bit quicker to let your hands fall more easily and come through a bit more from the inside. This should also help keeing the club head from dropping back behind you resulting in a bit of casting.
