500 Miles with an MGI X3 Caddy

My MGI X3 motorized caddy hit 500 miles (or an even more impressive 805 km). I've had it since July, 2018 and I thought I'd provide a review.

I got the X3 from Amazon when I found it on sale for about $630 (normally $999). It's a pretty basic model, without remote control but has a lithium battery. Of importance to me is that it folds up very easily and compactly (with the wheels turned around) and goes in to my small BMW trunk with the bag and rest of my golf gear. It unfolds faster than my old ClicGear cart and provides a sturdy support for my Sun Mountain Sync bag.

 

My home courses have gentle hills and although I could still manage them with the ClicGear, I'm clearly fresher toward the end of the round using the MGI. Do I miss the remote? Once or twice a round I might have a time when I think it would be nice to send the cart ahead, but not enough to overcome the price difference I would have paid to get the MGI Navigator with remote. Anyway, with a little planning, I can aim the X3 straight ahead a fixed distance to where I want it to go (not as convenient or precise as a remote). I have used it on a very hilly course (Bodega Harbour) and it was great. To me steering is very similar to on a ClicCart. I usually recharge the battery after every round, (I've read that its better not to completely discharge lithium batteries) but on a couple of occasions I've played 36 holes with no problem.

 

 

Problems: You still need to pay attention to the thing. The start button is in the top center of the handle and it's very easy to hit it by plopping your hand on it to rest. There's a couple of seconds lag and then it moves off. You quickly learn to park it so that it won't run into anything it it starts inadvertently and to avoid resting your hand on that spot. Also, there have been times when I thought I hit the button to stop it, got distracted, and didn't. I then had to make an effort to reach for it keep it from getting away from me. But overall, it's very easy and pleasant to use. Speed is adjusted by twisting that same button and it's pretty easy to find a comfortable walking speed.

 

My only mechanical problem was that one of the wheels began slipping on the axle so that It was only being driven by one wheel. I contacted MGI and spoke with their repair center in California. They said it was a bad clutch in my right wheel and quickly sent me a replacement wheel. It was all free under their 2-year warranty.

 

In all, love the cart and would do it again. Might get the ad-on seat though!

Great review. Thanks for taking the time to share the 500 mile update! I’m hoping to get the Navigator from Costco so this is great to hear about from a quality perspective.
