Driver HELP

neath2nd

Recommended Posts

I am really struggling with the driver can’t keep it on the course mainly right going right but sometimes left. Rest of the game is ok but this is becoming a real problem. Have tried many lessons but still can’t feel comfortable with driver or 3 wood. Does anyone have any suggestions/ online tips videos they would recommend?

Here is what I do to tighten up dispersion.

Pick your target. Pick the intermediate point on the target line e.g. a blade of grass, a tuft of grass.

Line up your driver with the target line and then settle into address position. Notice that you've created a connection between your grip and your shoulders akin to a triangle.

Take the driver back on the target line for as long as it will stay on the target line. Note: It won't but you want to create as wide an arc as possible. This will keep the connected "triangle" you had at address.

As you're taking the driver back on the target line, the club will inevitably deviate inside the target line. This is your cue to start hinging to complete your back swing. Only start to hinge the wrists once you feel the club is moving off the target line.

From the top, your primary focus will be to deliver the club from slightly inside the target line. If the ball was a clock then your focus is on "4". That's where you will swing through to a full relaxed release through the ball. Nice relaxed rhythm. Note: If you don't swing to 4 and come back down on the same backswing plane then you'll pull/hook it left or push/slice it right depending on the club face orientation.

What you've done is create a two plane swing. Keeping the club on the target line for as long as possible during the back swing creates the back swing plane. Focused delivery of the club into and through impact at 4 on the clock face created the downswing plane.

It's the same swing as you use with other clubs but the arc of the swing is much longer as the driver is the longest club. Your tempo and rhythm should be the same as what you'd use when hitting a mid-iron i.e. don't try to kill the ball.

Practice that, take note of what the ball flight is doing and when it becomes consistent refine it through practice and get a fitting to enhance it (launch, spin numbers optimized). Good golf is monotonous.

I can’t tell you where to find it, but I saw a video on here a few years ago that helped my driving of the ball. Had a two way miss and never knew what side would show up on any given swing. The video talked about placement of the driver head behind the ball. The instructor said play the ball off of the inside of the front heel and place the driver 3 to 4 inches behind the ball in the middle of your stance and start the swing from there. What I notice was with the ball forward and the club head forward directly behind my shoulders were open to the target line. With the driver back from the ball my shoulders are square and it has pretty much become point and shoot. Now hitting 87% of fairways. This method is not hard to get used to and it completely revamped my driver play. Try it, it may work for you also. Good luck!!
