Brad Faxon ownership group flip Donald Ross course for real estate development

Full disclosure: I was a member here for a few years. When I joined, the club was already in dire financial straits. The club committee entertained several offers in hopes of turning things around when a local ownership group, of which Faxon was a part, came forward with a plan. Faxon, having grown up in the area and at the club, and his father being a member for decades, was a catalyst in swaying the membership and the committee towards this group. In short, things did not unfold as the membership, myself included, was led to believe it would.

It's no secret that rounds of golf are in serious decline and that private clubs are closing all over. And there's certainly no guarantee things would have worked out in this case. But there doesn't seem to be anyone who thinks this was nothing more than a bait and switch. To see it happen to a Donald Ross gem (at least it was) is even more shameful. In a small state like RI, people like Faxon are known by everyone. This has done serious damage to his reputation here.

Already a couple of threads on it.

Seems to be more than one side to it, and solid evidence it wasn't a "bait and switch". Looks like they made representations when they purchased, had good intentions, spent a lot of money on the clubhouse, things were worse than expected, and in the end someone came along and made an offer they would have been stupid to refuse. Failed golf club on the verge of being sold for back taxes that had no chance of surviving. Time for it to go seems like the real economics of the situation.

And Faxon, looking at the record, has done more than pretty much anyone in the history of that state for charity and the game of golf as a focus? But make him the bad guy.
