I’ve come across both of those courses as recommendations as well, so definitely two I’ll look into, as Both are about 25 minutes from our hotel. 
 

I’ll try to find some more out about Hazeltine, see if I can figure out the unaccompanied guest fees and if there’s even a realistic chance of getting on a Friday early morning of a holiday weekend. 
 

edit: definitely more interested in Chaska, one of my favorite courses by me is also an Arthur Hill design.

I did end up playing at Chaska Town Course and really enjoyed it! Played respectable (for me) on the front but the back nine ate me up. Great course, and good time.

I just played a nice course just outside Rochester called Maple Valley. I was told it had some of the nicest scenery of any course in the state and it didn’t disappoint. The course had many holes that ran along the Root river and there were bluffs along several others. It would be nice to see the course when leaves are changing. The course was not the longest but that didn’t make it easier. Shots had to be placed in the right spot. Fairways were a little soft and greens were very nice. This is their signature hole.

I played Hazeltine, and outside of a few holes, was unimpressed. Legends and Chaska Town Course are both goods. Would also recommend Meadows at Mystic Lake and Rush Creek.

I'm not local to the cities, so others will likely have better knowledge. But, I played willingers maybe around 4 to 6 years ago. I enjoyed it! Condition was good, and there were a lot of fun holes. I would say it's a step down from courses like Chaska TC, Rush Creek, Stoneridge, Troy Burne, etc. But Willingers is still a fun track. I'd play there again. 

 

I'm actually heading up there to play this weekend myself, I was looking into where to play. I can't believe how much more expensive it is these days! At least there are great options.

Good to hear!  My son has a tournament any willengers next week and couldn’t find much on it.  
 

rush creek and Troy burne are really good.  From what I gathered, Willingers wasn’t going to be on that level but we are hoping for better greens than his last event in KC 😏

Willingers is one of the most difficult public tracks in the state.

 

Tight off the tee, smallish greens. Gotta find the fairway for sure as there are woods, ponds, etc lurking.

 

I played it recently, conditions were decent but not great but the greens rolled pretty well.

spot on assessment!  Not the easiest of walks either.
