My first clubs, circa 1964 as a 10 year old was a Driver, 3W,3,5,7,9 putter Wilson Kathy Corneilus Signature ladies clubs. Not much in the way of Jr clubs back then.

My first real set as a 14 year old was a matching set of Haig Ultras, wood and irons, used of course. A year later I had to have deviated septum surgery and my Dad bought me a new set of Haig Ultra woods as a present. I remember that I couldn't do anything but stare at those for about 6 weeks.

cheap set from KMart.....first round I played the head flew off the 3 iron....not unglued but broke off at hosel. Played them until they all broke except 7 iron.

So then I went used club shopping...got a driver, woods, putter and wedges......got a bag off ebay....then need irons and realized they are most expensive...so asked a couple old timers I know that play 4-5 times a week and shoot in low 80s (one is 84 and other is 81)....one has pacemaker and runs the entire course between hits...is a local living legend...and still shoots his age. Anyhow they both told me to go to Pinemeadow Golf and buy some callaway clones they make as there is a difference between fakes and clones from a reputable company. SO I went and bought a set of their X-20 like clones and have been playing them ever since. Had the Lamkin grips installed as are on all my other clubs...and been very happy.

When I get down into low 90s consistently I think I am going to get fitted and try to find a good set on sale or used...I hope the MP-57s are on sale by then. :cheesy:

My first matched set of irons (approx. 1964) were made by Forecastle, who were a Scottish company. I never saw anyone else use these heavy irons. As a schoolboy I saved up and bought them one at a time. They cost three guineas each. As each one arrived the pro changed the grip to a rubber ribbed 'Avon Golf Pride,' which no other grip could match in wet conditions. Changing each grip cost me ten shillings and six pence.

Sadly I sold the clubs a couple of years later and gave up golf so as to concentrate all my time on athletics. Being good at two things can be a curse for anyone aiming high. I chose the wrong sport as my athletics career ended in injury six years later. It took me until this year to take up golf again, and start to forgive myself for making the wrong choice.

I would have loved to have been a golf pro!

My dad fixed me up with a mixed bag, mostly old, handmade, Scottish, hickory shafted irons, a Scottish blade putter with hickory shaft, a hickory shaft Brassie and one steel shaft GolfCraft 4 wood. Quite a learning set, which I still own. My first matched set was Hazel Hixon ladies 3, 5, 7, 9 irons and 2 and 4 woods---as a young guy I hated these clubs but Dad knew what he was doing, since junior clubs hadn't been invented yet.

Christmas 1965... Sam Snead Blue Ridge starter set: 1W-3W and 3-5-7-9-P.

I was both jazzed and bummed - jazzed because the woods were the "new, improved" model without the screws in the phenolic insert, bummed because Chicagoland golf wasn't going to start for another three months.

Still have the irons.

I won my first set at the age of 5 in a raffle drawing hosted by Chi-Chi Rodriguez in a Chicago suburb. A pretty exciting moment in itself.

The set consisted of a RAM (no idea what make... they are in storage somewhere) 4,6,and 8 irons. Also came with a Driver (which was a RAM) and a 3-wood (no idea what it was) and a putter. Loved those clubs. Sure were an upgrade from the cut down blade 4-iron i was using at the time.

J.C. Higgins Johnny Bullas. They were heavy, stiff, and deader than a doornail, but I played out of a 3 handicap with those irons, hand-me-down Bobby Jones woods, and a 33" J.C. Higgins blade putter -- and I mean blade.

55 years later, I wonder how I would have played with a set that felt alive? It never occurred to me that I might have had different clubs, and I honestly don't remember lusting after the new clubs that the adult members of the course had. Maybe that's why I'm making up for it now!!

  • 1 year later...

Hand me downs from my grandfather. Powerbuilt blades (I don't remember which model), driver, 3w, and 5w persimmons, and a bullseye brass(?) putter.

As gramps would only play Powerbuilts (he only drove Buicks and smoked Camels as well), these and other hand me down were what I had until I went in the Marines. He was in his early 70s when I left, and could still shoot in the 70s. I didn't appreciate that until much, much later in life, and he was gone.

Primary bag:

Titleist 915Fd 13.5
Titleist 913h 17
Mizuno MP-18 4-PW

Bettinardi mid-shank putter

Backup bag:

Ping G30 fw 13
Ping G30 hybrid 19
Ping iBlade 4-PW power spec
Macgregor VIP wedges 51, 56, and 60

I played with borrowed clubs for a few years and then saved up enough to buy my own in 1969. I think the clubs were Northwesterns, but I remember Moe Norman's name on them more clearly. Consisted of a used driver and 3 wood, and a half-set of irons (3,5,7,9) with aluminum shafts. They were being cleared out for some ridiculous price. $35 with a basic canvas carry bag seems right. I filled in the even clubs later from the mismatch bins for a couple of bucks each. Same model, but with George Archer's name. I always thought the Normans played better than the Archers, but I really wasn't nearly good enough to tell. I still think the spin-induced rise at the end of a good drive with that persimmon head was the prettiest thing. That solid crack, and the ball floating out and up over a fairway shining with morning dew, is one of my strongest early memories of the game. Not how we want it to go now, and I wouldn't want to go back, but it's nice having the memory.

I started out with a set of unknown origin that were my mom's. Heavy with horrible grips. No wonder she hated golf. Then I got to use my dad's Sam Snead Blue Ridge woods and irons and thought I had hit the big time. My first full set was a set of Jack Nicklaus woods and irons I bought from the pro used. Kept those a year or so and then bought my first new full set- Dunlop Maxpower forged irons with woods. Payed for some of the price by mowing the pro's grass. Next set was a full set of Wilson Staff woods and irons. Paid $165 for the irons in 1973 or 4. Woods were about $125 I forget. They irons had the changeable swingweights. The woods were laminated and were great. Unfortunately this was in my club throwing days and I ruined the 3wd early. The driver eventually split in the neck. The 5wd lasted for years. Even put in 2 new inserts-that's a lost art.

Womens "Patty Bergs".....ha.

My aunt had passed away so I grabbed her clubs and took to the game. A few years later I holed out from 110 for a 2 with the PW. At that precise moment in time I knew that I was born to play this game. I figured, if I can put the ball in the hole with no instruction and 20 year old ladies clubs, then I can do it with anything and from anywhere.
