What was your first set of sticks?

First clubs were a Wilson starter set, 1W, 3W, 3,5,7,9 and putter with a bag and pull cart. Grips were flat on one side to promote correct grip.

First full set was Wilson K-28 and an 8802 putter.

I started out by selling my prepaid meal ticket for the quarter in College (1958)
and buying the local CC Golf Pro's last years Staff clubs, Walter Hagen blades 2-pw,
Walter Hagen woods 1,3,4 and a used Bullseye putter, along with a Hogan SW.
Hagen was made by Wilson Staff at the time and the Pro kept his WS staff bag
and gave me a canvas stick bag (remember those?) Cost $95.00
Almost 52 years later and I'm still wheeling and dealing. Its still fun too.

TBD

Cobra Baffler hybrid 22* Regular

My first clubs were some cut down hand me down Spaulding's from my dad and I played with various sets as I got older. When my dad would get new clubs I would get his old ones. The first set I actually bought myself was in 68 I used the money I saved from the Army and got a set of Wilson Staff X-31's, which I wish I still had.

That must have been quite a task finding those Ping Eye 2's in 83. ;) I'm far from being a Ping guy but didn't the Ping Eyes come out in 88 or 89?

The Ping Eye 2's were first introduced in 1982. Ping introduced other irons in future years. Check
out the ping golf website in the club archive or club history section on their website. If memory serves
I think ping was embroiled in a fight with the USGA in 1984 or 1985 over the grooves in the ping eye 2 irons.

You were right, and I was way wrong. Looks like the Ping eyes were introduced in 1978 and the eye 2's came out in 1982.

Heck, I was only 10 years off... :D

My first set of irons/woods were Kroydons. I longed for Wilson Staff irons cause Arnie used them. But, my first REAL set of irons were 1962 Macgregor DX Tourneys. Bought them for $125 and played awfully well with them for a long time. Now, there is that exact set on the used club rack at my club and they are calling my name each time I walk by them. Must resist!!

When I first started playing golf, I used some clubs borrowed from a friend who was about a year and a half older than me. I was probably 11 years old, give or take. His father had played golf some years earlier, so that family had several bunches (sets) of clubs and I was given some to use. I don't remember many details of those days, but I do remember some things about the clubs, and the fact that my friend and I walked, carrying our clubs, about 4 or 5 blocks to a municipal course.
The clubs had names rather than numbers. I used the following clubs: Brassie (probably a 2 wood),
Spoon (about a 3 wood). The spoon was one of my favorites.
I remember 3 irons. They are mashie, mashie-niblick, and niblick. And, of course, a putter. I no longer have any knowledge of the origin of these clubs, but the irons were from a matched set.

My first set was a set of Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge irons. I traded three cases of Coors beer to a friend from Chicago that had just graduated from medical school and had received a set of Wilson Satff irons for graduation. I bought the matching woods and later added a bullseye putter. I still have the putter. I replaced the Sam Snead's with Spalding Executives, which didn't last long and gave the Wilsons to a friend that was a non-golfer. We're still playing golf together almost thirty years later, so I consider that to be a good investment. Now we both are getting on and playing Cleveland Hibores.

I was a football player in high school, but i got injured during my junior year, and wasn't allowed to play any more (so my mom's responsible for my love of golf) I went out for the golf team the next year. Had never picked up a club until then. From a garage sale i bought the whole shmear, a set of clubs, balls, tees, bag, shoes (they were a little big). The irons were MacGregor tourneys, cant remember what model, and the woods were a 1,3,5, set of MacGregor Golden Bear woods. I remember the woods were finished in a beautiful brown and gold color. The bag was a big staff type bag and the most hideous shade of green you may have ever seen, but I carried it around all fall and as bad as i was i still remember thinking to myself why i had even bothered with football in the first place. My love affair with golf was born.

My first golf "set" was a bunch of random clubs from the Salvation Army thrift store. McGregor blade 4, 7, 9 iron, and two steel shaft persimmon woods, 3 and a 5 wood. The grips were all slick so I learned how to change them out. I polished the persimmons with car polish and used rubbing compound to take the rust stains out of the iron shafts. I also had a canvas "Sunday" bag. I found balls in the bushes along the course so I never had to buy balls.

1st - New Wilson Sam Snead "Blue Ridge" 3,5,7,9 plus Driver and Three Wood with Snead's Blue Ridge "Strato Bloc" woods.

I really felt like a pro when I bought my next set of Spaulding "Top Flight" 3 through PW irons! In 1969, they were used from Bert Dargie's shop in Memphis. I walked in and
fell in love with them after a couple of waggles. I asked Bert if he would hold them until I got paid the next week. They were $75 for the set.
He said take "them now and come back and pay me next week". "Golf Galaxy" has not offered a similar favor! : (

For those not familiar with Bert Dargie's Shop in Memphis. His granddad, from St. Andrews Scotland, gravitated to Tennessee. (Almost 100% of the hickory for shafts came from Tennessee.) Into the 60's and 70's, Dargie's was a frequent haunt of tour players when they came to play the tour stop in Memphis. Last I heard, Bert is still with us and making hickory shafted sticks in the Memphis area.

I was given a set of Wilson Staff Goosenecks as my first set. The first set that I bought myself was the Tommy Armour 845's.

My first set also and they had a flat area for your left hand called a reminder. The 845s were a great set...I loved that 3W!!
