0.335 Hybrid Shaft? Tip STIFF

Recommended Posts

I play the Wishon 775 hybrids (19 and 24 deg) which take 0.335 shafts. The Steelfiber 85x I have in there are too soft. I play them short (which means extra headweight for swingweighting) so the shaft has to withstand a lot of force. That's a much heavier head than .335 shafts were really designed to take.

Any suggestions on a tip stiff shaft I could pick up for under $100? Looking for something 80-100g range.

thanks!

Have you considered the shafts designed for that head? Tom Wishon has specifically designed 335 hybrid shafts and the Red sounds like what you are looking for. The Black is a heavier, but the Red is a stiffer profile.

I second Twin2L's suggestion. I have a Wishon 775 24* that had an NV 95-x tipped 1.5" and the tip still felt soft. I swapped out the NV for a Wishon Tour GI 335 shaft (I believe that this was the predecessor to the current Wishon Black hybrid shaft). The Wishon hybrid shaft in stiff flex feels a lot more stable than the NV 95-x; probably because the Wishon shaft is designed for hybrids with 240-250 g head weights.

Another shaft that I was looking at was SK Fiber Hybrid Force 80 shafts. They come in .335 tips and are 88 grams. The x-flex is on sale at hireko golf for $12.95. I have never played this shaft though, so I cannot speak to its stiffness.

I believe that the Tour GI 335 are discontinued, but I did read a post by Mr. Wishon that the current Black Hybrid shaft is just an updated version of the Tour GI 335.

I have never tried the Red Hybrid shafts, but looking at the specs they would be a little too light for my liking.

If only they made that S2S Black in X flex. The specs say stiff is for 75-90mph 5i swingers. I'm more like 93-95. Might be too soft still. I like the 100g weight though. Might give it a try. And that SK Fiber is X flex but it says it's mid/high flight. That's usually code for "soft". It's ridiculous how there still isn't a good way to compare shafts. Makes me crazy.

Wishon shafts meant for the Hyb.a steel shaft, true temper makes .335 shafts with plenty of parallel tip section for tipping. Cobra made a bunch of their hybrids with .335 (T Rail 2012 is one of them) and you can possibly find those shafts for them on the bay, and tip a bit. ream out the hosels, doesnt take much to go from .335 to .370 you just have to be careful to make sure you do it straight and not crooked. you can find a fairway wood shaft that has a generous parallel tip and keep tipping until you get a good feel, and then finally cut to final length from butt end and swingweight (I did this with the aforementioned Cobra T-Rail and used a VS Proto X flex fairway shaft.)

These can be substantially tip trimmed. The Black for instance show a 2-1/2" tip trim for a 6 hybrid, so you can clearly tip this a lot.

Very happy you're having the results you were looking for. No hooking is excellent. I have found that the 775's are very friendly. I can surely turn them, but they're friendly enough to keep on line.I like that Tom designed his fairways so they could be used as a direct replacement for an iron. I use my 21* as a 3 iron replacement and it fits the gapping perfectly.

I really like his shafts. I use the Black in my hybrids, fairway and driver.

I used to use them a lot, but had a really bad experience with the red (put it in my bag and some friends... nobody liked it) and got away from them. They have serious bang for the buck - I need to go back to using them more. Very pleased with this black hybrid so far. Might need to try black in my driver (tipped a lot). I'm always tinkering with something!

The Black 85 X profile may be very good for you. It affords flexibility on tip trim for a strong swinger. A 3 wood trim is 1", a 5 wood is 2" all the way to 3" for a 9 or 11 wood.

I played the Red for a couple of years and found them very playable, but preferred the smoothness of the Black. Even with an injury and significantly slower swing speed, I play best with the Black. I experimented with the White and like it, but lost too much distance and didn't see much change in trajectory.
