Broken Pro modus 105

i was at the range a couple of weeks ago and my Srixon 585 shaft broke between the hosel and ferule. I called the local golf store and he said that I should be covered by Srixon but it could take up to 12 weeks to send it in and get it back. The local golf store has the same set of 585s with the same factory modus 105s on the rack. I want to get a modus 105 7 iron shaft and have them cut the shaft from the tip and the butt end so when the 7 iron shaft and the 9 iron shaft are beside each other the taper profile match.

My question. Is a Nippon pro modus 105 9 iron shaft and 7 iron shaft the same shaft, just cut differently at the tip and butt. Or is there something different in the interior that wouldn’t allow a 7 iron to be cut to a 9iron and match the factory spec. I realize there is a weight plug in both shafts that would have to be changed. The kid at the golf store told me that they couldn’t cut any of the tip.

No they are not the same. Those are constant weight shafts, so the shorter the iron, the heavier and stiffer the shaft. I'm guessing it would end up 4-6 gm's lighter than the original 9 iron shaft after cutting to 9i length.

Plus they are taper tip which generally means butt trim only. In some special cases tip trimming can be done but it means you'll have to bore out the hosel to .370 to get it to fit in the hosel if you tip trim more than 1/4" - 3/8" - which isn't going to be enough to accommodate the stiffness changes you'd need. That's also assuming the shaft taper doesn't increase above the hosel. I don't know if that's the case for the Nippons or not. So one would have check to make sure it has a long enough parallel tip section above the taper.

If they were going to just butt trim the 7 iron shaft to 9 iron length how would it change its characteristics.

Soft stepped x2 and as I already mentioned, lighter cut weight. Soft stepping is usually noticable in terms of stiffness feel. Whether either of those will be significant or not is separate question you wont know the answer to until you give it a try.

Personally, if you're in a hurry, I'd just order a new 9i shaft online someplace, shouldn't take more than 1 week.
