Currently a 12. However, about 15 years ago, had it as low as 4. Dropped out of golf for about 10 years and just started playing again occasionally last year. Now, I'm playing 3-5 times per week(I just retired last year). Hopefully back into single digits in the next few weeks. The short game is really coming around which helps greatly.

i actually dont care I just want to hit more repeatable and accurate shots....if I start shooting in low 90s I would be very very happy....indeed. I have always excelled at sports but this GOLF thing is kicking my a**.

You say that now, but when you are shooting in the low 90's you'll be kicking yourself that you aren't in the mid 80's. "If I had only not flubbed those two chips, and not 3 putted the 14th, etc. etc. etc..." that's what makes this all so fun...

hi just thought i would add this into your post. i play golf over in the uk and i understand there is a few differences between our and your handicap systems, ours works on each round if you shot under your handicap u go down 0.1 per 1 under and if you play over your handicap you gain 0.1. this then gives us in the uk a very accurate handicap, was just wondering if someone in america is saying hes off +3 how is that calculated? i hear thing about how you take the 5 best rounds and the 5 worst??? would be good to hear from someone in the us who plays off +3 to see what he thinks his handicap would be over here, also why dont they use one system accross the world!!! golf is golf, no need to complicate things across the world is there?

You are not alone! I picked up the sticks in July for the first time in 30+ years and am still very much struggling to find some consistency.

I have managed to drop my handicap from a 30+ to a 20+, so that's some progress. I am trying to play evey week to improve as much as I can, but I mainly just try to focus on the occaisional good shot and forget the bad ones.

All the low handicappers around here are a little intimidating, but the information is great.

Keep on hacking!

US system is as follows. System keeps your last 20 scores. As you put a new score in, your last score drops off. But, of those 20 scores, only you best 10 count. And of the best 10, it's 96% of that. Each time you put a score in, it is given an index based off this formula. So each score will be given an index. The 10 lowest indexes are added up and divided by 10 and then only 96% of that number is used. You get each rounds index by:

Your score - course rating x 113 / course slope rating you played

An example. If you shoot 80 from a set of tees on a course with a 72.5 course rating and a slope of 135

80- 72.5 = 7.5 x 113 / 135 = 6.27 or 6.3 index number. Therefore you would have shot to a 6.3 that day even though you were 8 over par.

Our system is all about potential. The USGA says you should shoot your handicap 4 out of 20 times. You should shoot lower 2 out of 20 times. And your scoring average should be about 3-4 strokes higher than your handicap.

So, if your a scratch golfer, you should have a scoring average (based on par 72) of around 75-76 over your last 20 rounds. Most

golfers that don't know this are surprised when they play with a scratch or 1-2 handicap and see them shoot 80. WHen in fact, that is not that bad. WHile, it's certainly not there best round, it happens.

They say Tiger is a 8-10 handicap. and his scoring average is around 68-89. WHich is 3-4 under par.

Oh yeah, I'm a Sh-tty 1 handicap. that feels like a 10. i go low, and I go high! But, it has consitently come down, so thats good.

I've been playing the same course every Tuesday this summer and I went from a 14 to a 10. I'm still prone to losing 1 or 2 balls off the tee. I just give away too many shots and I really put a lot of pressure on myself. As a result my G.I.R. is always in the single digits. Seems like I'm always putting for par and not birdie.

I'm surprised no one has commented about how us higher handicappers are supposed to choose in the poll between 16-18 and double bogey golfer. Consider that the USGA defines a bogey golfer as having a handicap of 20. So I didn't participate in the poll. My HC is 24, so I am getting close to being a bogey golfer. I neither want to misrepresent myself as a 16-18 nor claim to be a double bogey golfer. I was only slightly worse than double bogey when I started playing the game, so it is pretty obnoxious to force anyone worse than an 18 HC to choose between 'double bogey' and claiming to be better than they are. The poll only allows about 1/4 people with handicaps to represent their HC with any accuracy at all.

I've seen a lot of people play golf, and know that my 24 is better than most out there. Why restrict anyone who isn't better than a bogey golfer to being a double bogey golfer?

When making a poll, there is a limit to the amount of options to select. If I could have made 2 stroke spaces from a +4 to a 36, I would have. So I had to make do with what I had & I figured the gap between the game of a 4 and a 10 is significantly larger than that of a 24 like yourself and an 18. I figured that most high handicappers would consider themselves a bogey golfer or a double bogey golfer and wouldn't nitpick about the lack of a 24 to select in my simple little survey. I still think it gives us a feel for the playing ability of the members of this site even as "obnoxious" as it is.
