Canadian Juniors wanting to play US college golf

Hey i was wondering what differnt things I would have to do to get into a College in the states. Is there a way to get a great scholarship? Is it hard for us to get into the states with a Scholarship? What kind of SAT score do we need to get a scholarship for golf? And because it is hard for us to travel back and forth into the sates for tournament, what tournaments should we decide to play located in the states?

There are many great sources that can help you just a (insert name of your favorite search engine here) search away.

The only way to get a good scholarship to most schools in the states is to be incredibly academically gifted or incredibly athletically gifted. I would say that when it comes to giving out scholarships colleges probably aren't going to deny giving you one if you have earned it based on their standards simply because you are not American. I would suggest that you play any AJGA events you can get in to (which will be a problem) to get your name known, but if you are playing well in your home country and contact the coaches with a resume you will still be considered (at least by most coaches). They are in the business of fielding the best team possible so if they feel that you would improve their team they will probably be interested. I would say that SAT scores don't have an impact at most schools unless they are dramatically low. If you are in the 1500-1600 range at most schools you will be fine. The story is a little different for the Ivy League schools and others of that same caliber (e.g. Stanford). For those schools I would say that a 2050-2100 is a minimum on the reasoning test plus decent (above 650) SAT subject test scores on two or three subject tests. The other thing that you should consider if the Ivy League schools are where you want to go is that most (I'm not sure, but maybe all) don't give athletic scholarships or merit scholarships. Money that is given out at those schools is strictly financial need based. Let me know if you have any other questons. What part of canada you from? but things like Future links, Provincial Championship, Canadian Junior, those are good ones to play in, try and play as many RCGA events as you can, as well as your provinces golf association events. MJTs are good for experience, CJGAs arent bad either as they have some pretty good qualifiers

I have hopes of going to "UC Berkeley," what kind of SAT and Golf Scores would I need to get in? Would they provide a a good scholarship?

To get into Cal-Berkley you need to have straight A's in all of your classes. The SAT changed it's scoring since I took it, but I imagine you would need at least 2200 (it is 2400 now, right) and in terms of golf you probably need to be going low in major tournaments.

Based on the types of scholarships the top players in Canada are receiving I would have to say that to get into UC Berkeley you would probably have to be ranked in the top 5 or 10 in Canada, golf wise.

yup, i dont know of many canadians that go to cal schools, most of the BC boys have gone to washington, washington state, oregon state and oregon if they are the top players

I would say this is a very accurate assessment of what you would need considering you're not a California resident. I am currently applying to UCLA and have found that the UC system is not very inviting for those from outside of California. The total percentage of students from outside of California at most UCs is right about 7%. So if you figure at the larger schools that have an entering class of 6,000-7,000 very few of those aren't California residents. Thusly, excellent SATs would be a way to increase your chances of being in that 7%. Berkeley's middle 50 is between 1760-2160 I believe. Having scores above that top number would help your case. I would also recommend doing as much community service as you can find time for. Schools are now taking a more hollistic approach when it comes to admitting students and scores have less influence than they once did. You might also want to contact Coach Desimone now and let him know that you are interested in playing for him. Getting your name known early definitely won't hurt your cause.
