Womens irons

What is the difference between irons for women and men? If it is just length, can you just modify the club length to suit a woman? Is it just better to buy irons for a woman instead?

When my wife was fitted for a set he put her in a men's head. He told her that the difference is in the build as far as shaft, flex, swingweight, ect. She does carry a solid 10 HCP so that might make a difference. She also uses a senior flex shaft so I am guessing her swing is a little faster than average.

You might want to try posting this in the club lab forum as I am sure some of those guys build womens clubs.

Poncho, when my fiancé decided to take up the game about a year ago she bought a cheaper set of womens irons to just "see if she liked it" well there was a lot of frustration through some earlier lessons as she continually topped the ball and had problems "staying down" through the shot. We went in to Edwin Watts to look for my birthday present and i was hitting some clubs and she was talking with our salesman and as the conversation progressed they touched on the topping problem and he asked if she was using off the rack womens clubs, which she was. Well first thing he did was give here a mens length club stating her being 5'7 it would be a much better fit, and then after a few swings on the simulator to get some rough numbers he had her in a mens senior shaft just like justhackin's wife. So out of the store she walked with a set of x-20's mens with senior shafts. Next trip to the range and her lesson we were rewarded with new smiles and her enjoyment , watching her hit many more good shots. So my best suggestion would be take her to a good fitter and find out whats best for her.

In theory, the shafts are lighter, softer flex, grips are smaller diameter and they are shorter as noted. Some have lighter women specific club heads as well

I'll agree with everything that has been mentioned here.


If the clubs are for a beginner, my suggestion is always to pick up and inexpensive set of ladies clubs (woods/irons/putter/bag). Inexpensive being the key. That way if she doesn't care for the game, you're not out that much money. But if she loves the game and wants to keep playing, as her skills develop she will be ready for a complete set, and again....you haven't invested that much.


I worked with 20-30 ladies throughout the summer. At the beginning, they all used the clubs we had on hand, which are mainly old demo's and throw aways, many of which are not suited for females...or beginners for that matter. We did have a quite a few PING Zing's with lighter shafts and shorter lengths so I tried to get all of them hitting something closer to what might fit them at least one of the days, mostly so they could see what an impact proper club fitting did for your game. A few days I brought a few of my sets from home, the ones who were close to my build and posture really benefited from those days. Slowly, they began showing up with sets that they picked up at Target or Academy Sports, etc. They began having a lot more fun. The shafts were lighter (most were graphite) as opposed to the heavy steel shafted demos. Most had smaller radius grips that fit their hands better. There were a few ladies of course who were taller, had larger hands, stood more upright, were more athletic etc. so a mens club sometimes worked better for them. By the end of the 2 months of sessions, there were 5 ladies who were ready to jump the gun on a custom set. 3 ladies went with PING, the other 2 with Callaway.


I guess the moral to that long story is: start the game cheap. get to know it. start to love it. then DO NOT hesitate to get what fits your game.

i remember playing with dad's old wilson blades cut down and regripped. that sucked. i hated golf. but then i got some girly northwesterns and it was a whole new game. golf was fun.

custom fitting is everything it is cracked up to be....and more.

I would agree with the last post. Try something inexpensive to make sure they like it. If they do want to continue on it would be best to get custom fit by a professional club-fitter.
