Ralph Lauren, RLX and Polo Golf - Why is what you see on TV not at retail?

Okay, so I think I know a little about marketing so let me throw that out there right off the bat.  Billy Horschel and, up until recently, JT wear some very stylish RLX and Polo Golf pieces that many of us see on TV coverage and think "that is sweet, I want it".   So it seems that most of what they wear is not available at retail.  A case in point would be the Polo Golf five-pocket slacks that Billy wore yesterday in the final round.  They were what I would call cranberry in color and looked sharp.  But it appears they are made only for him.  Seems odd to spend lots of money to have a player wear something you don't sell.  Don't you agree?

I'll start off by saying I would also like a pair of those pants!

 

Now that being said... To my knowledge, RLX and Polo Golf don't have much more than a tiny fraction of market share when it comes to golf apparel. Most of what you can buy retail is in traditional colors (blue, white, black, tan, etc.). They do have those 5 pocket pants on their site, but in basic color options. The majority of people aren't going to buy cranberry or plaid pants so they don't make them. . 

 

Sure they could do a production run on Cranberry pants but that would probably require them making hundreds if not thousands of pairs in a dozen or so different sizes. Being a nontraditional color I doubt they would even sell enough of them to break even, and a company as big as RL is not interested in something unless it's going to make them money.

Just have to know where to look. Trendygolf has the stuff Horschel and formerly Thomas wore on TV. It’s about market penetrating strategy. RL isn’t going to try and generate a ton of traffic to their website to drive golf sales because they have to keep the massive inventory when it isn’t their priority as a company. So they sell most of it at wholesale to online retailers like Trendygolf, green grass pro shops, and department stores like Macy’s and Dillards. Way less overhead when you sell it at wholesale like that and it still allows the product to get in the hands of people that want it. For RL’s market share in golf, it’s really the only strategy if they want to keep their golf lines profitable.

Thanks for responding.  I called Trendy and they said they did not have them.  Not sure I spoke to their expert but that was the answer I got.

Not sure what exactly you’re looking for but they have a pretty decent collection of Polo/RLX stuff

It’s even worse here in the UK. Seems like TrendyGolf have simply changed the description of items from something like RLX AirFlow Polo 2020 to RLX AirFlow Polo 2021. They are exactly the same items!

I live in Northeast Florida and am finding RLX golf pants and polos at Ross at around the $30 price point.

Fairway Styles is another option for RLX which I have used in the past year. Although it seems everything they offer has the RLX logo on the left chest. I agree, I love they style and design of RLX and the polos just happen to fit me perfectly.
