Blacksburg Courses

Meeting a few friends in Blacksburg, VA in late April and we’re looking to play two rounds. We’re planning on playing one at the Dye River course, but would appreciate recommendations on anywhere else that’s fine to play.

 

Any can’t miss restaurants would be great to hear about too.

When I lived in Blacksburg as a college student the group I played with mostly went to Hanging Rock to the north and Draper Valley to the south.  Both were decent courses.  A couple of my favorite restaurants (again college student perspective and mostly college town bar kind of food):  The Cellar, Sharkeys, Pk,s, Souvlaki, and loved the roof at Boudreauxs when weather was nice (sadly I believe that has closed).  Also highly recommend breakfast at Gillies and donuts from Carol Lee.  It has been quite a few years since I graduated and a lot has changed and so someone with more recent knowledge can chime in.  I go back a couple of times a year, but always hit my favorite spots and haven’t tried some of the new places that have opened.  Also recommend The River Company Restaurant and Brewery after Pete Dye River Course.

I am originally from Blacksburg and my family still lives there. The best golf in the area is private but could be accessible if you or your friends are a member of a private club.  Blacksburg Country Club is an excellent course and is really the only true golf course left in Blacksburg proper.  Several of the state’s top junior players come out of their junior program including Lanto Griffin who is a PGA tour winner (and myself lol who was never one of the state’s top players or on the tour but did capitan the junior club team that Lanto played on).  Additionally, Ballyhack GC (now part of the Dormie Network), Hidden Valley Country Club, and Roanoke Country Club are excellent private courses less than 1 hour north in Roanoke (Ballyhack is one of my all time favorites up there with The likes of Riveria and Crystal Downs).
 

In town, VT still runs a 9 hole course (the back nine of their original course on campus) and the Blacksburg runs a 9 Hole Municipal Course (aka the Hill) that was recently renovated.  The Hill is fun to play once and a cool ‘experience’ due to the extreme topography.

 

The best public options in the greater area are the VT River Course (technically ~20 min away in Radford) and the Primland Resort Course (about 1 hour south).  Note Primland is one of the top courses in the state and an awesome  purse and resort.

 

Covid has really hurt the restaurant scene in town. LithoVt highlighted many of the Blacksburg restaurant staples and I will second Gillies, Carol Lee, Souvlaki, and the Cellar and add Lefty’s (the owner father and son manager are friends and good golfers).  Eastern Divide Brewery is also a good time and our Daily Bread and Substation 2 (trust me, any VT grad, or local) are good lunch/sandwich spots.  PKs (started by an extended ‘family’ member), Sharky’s, and Top of the Stairs are traditional college bar scenes that have decent food.  RIP Boudreauxs if it stays closed - my wife and I also had our first date in high school!
