Springtime - which clubs to replace?

Hi all!

 

I kicked off the new season with a couple of lessons to lay the ground work for project 230y carry...  😉

But GIR and getting the ball more often on the green with my irons (and woods) is my first priority this year. And yes, I know driving distance would help in that department!

 

The pro looked at kept looking at my 7i performance and told me that I should look at better performing irons distance-wise. Umm, why I asked? The he it hit his 7iron about 20y further than he hit mine. He is a nice guy, but I am not sure why he recommends new irons on pure distance alone.

 

Below is my current on course distance performance - carry and roll will improve a bit when it gets warmer (currently 40-50 °F) and the fairways drier. I play 6,600y long courses, which are a bit to long for my driving performance. I hit a soft 4h often instead of the 5i, which I prefer on uphill green and punch shots (and mishit a couple going to hard at it...). For me the club gapping looks workable, 7i to 5i is currently getting some love.

 

So, should I really replace my irons? What would I gain? What do you think? Other recommendations?

Distance is always nice.  Would it help drop your handicap?  Very possible but not guaranteed.  Do you NEED distance irons?  Not really.  If you're happy with your current set up, then go with it.

You're not that long which is fine as long as you know your game and you can work your way around the course just fine. But your gapping is a little odd it seems with some clubs basically going the same distance and then you have a few very large gaps. Not sure what clubs you have but if possible maybe a gapping session and if your irons can be bent bend them so you have useable gaps vs a few clubs overlapping.

 

My only suggestion for new irons would be sure maybe a bit more distance but more consistent gapping would be better especially if you know your game well.
