A question about my wedge shafts

Recommended Posts

A little background first. I’m 67 and my swing speed is right on the border of Regula and Senior flex (87mph with driver). I currently play to a 14 from the white tees.

Like everyone else, I’m not getting younger so I decided to go with A flex MMT 60g shafts in my new Gen 3 0311xp irons.

My new wedges are 54* & 58* Ping Glide 3.0 and they have the stock steel shaft in them. I bought them thinking they would gap perfectly with a set of G425 irons I have since canceled after an 11 week wait.

My question is would I be best served to

A. Leave them alone and just play them as is

B. Reshaft them with the matching MMT 60 shafts

C. Try to sell them and order the PXG forged with the matching shafts

I’m most concerned with the 54* as that will be used for full swings along with shots around the green and I’m concerned I might have too big a gap between it and my 48* GW. I’m thinking the lighter shaft will give me a few extra yards, I’m just not sure how big the difference would be with my swing speed.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

D (or maybe A2)    Actually hit them as is and see how they feel and perform relative to the irons before making any decisions.

It may or may not - or it could also change the dynamic loft delivered.

In either case you can't use the loft gaps to predict distance gaps ESPECIALLY when there are shaft differences to account for.   If it turns out the distance gaps are not ideal - BUT there is nothing wrong with the feel/control with the stock shafts - then all you should need to do is tweak the lofts to help "fix" any distance gap issues.

If the feel of the stock shafts relative to the iron shafts is not appealing or causing problems with performance (accuracy and dispersion, not distance) then it's time to consider reshafting or replacing.

My demos are similar to yours I just bought the Gen3 P irons thru Gap and a 54 forged wedge all with MMT 60 A flex. My driver swing speed is low 90s but is smooth. It was my decision and I was very surprised I went with the A flex but the shafts are working nicely. I love the 54 on full swings and it is my go to around the greens. I think your gap will be excessive. My gap wedge is 50* in the P irons and the yardage gap is 15 yards. I get more yardage with my 5-6-7-8 but not so much with the 9-W-G-54. I am still adjusting from my kbs Steel R11 TMs but really do like the whole set up.

My GW is 49, SW is 54.5 . The gap between them is fine. The doesn't mean the OPs gap is good, but just because its six degrees I wouldn't assume that it will be too wide. If anything I'd think that his 54 to 58 degree gap might be too small, I go from 54.5 to 60, but that's as much a matter of personal preference as anything else.
