Mizuno pro 225 vs HMB

I guess I fall into the category of crappy cast irons since I'm playing G425s 😐.  However, I don't like their feel and I think the HMBs would be a great introduction into a set of Mizzys, offering both forgiveness and feel.  If anyone has a set of HMBs they're look to sell, I posted a WTB.

I may post them (HMB’s) on BST soon, but they are 5-PW with Modus 105s at 1/2 over length built by Mizuno. They are near mint, I’m looking to get rid of them because I have tennis elbow and in need of graphite.

Ive been playing my MP-37’s in their place since the MP-37’s have graphite shafts, but the graphite shaft is an older make from the 90’s and a little lighter than I care for. I’ll probably sell the MP-37’s here on BST as well soon, which are also pretty mint.

I’m currently attempting to test out some graphite shafts and scheduling a shaft fitting at a True Spec golf here is South West Florida.

I wasn’t sure if I would keep the HMB or MP-37 heads and just reshaft, but I’m thinking of just getting rid of both to fund a custom build of New Level 623MB, or MB/CB combo.

I’ll take pics soon and PM you when they hit the BST if you’d like.

Im still not sure if I’m better off selling the club whole, or just selling the heads and shafts separate. 🤷‍♂️

Any feedback from your experience with the 225s?

I have a hard time hitting them solid; I have to actually open up the face a little to get solid strikes. I just think the sole doesn't work as well for me as the Srixon ZX7s. They do produce really good distance while still maintaining spin. The six iron is at least as long as the 5 in the Srixons, if not half a club longer. I just seem to hit the Srixons out of the middle more, and on really poor strikes I get a more playable outcome, where the Mizunos are long everywhere, so pulls and pushes can travel pretty far off line.

Thanks. This is what I am a little concerned about. My home course is very hilly and I rarely have a flat lie. I have been playing MP-62s for 10+ years and definitely utilize their playability more often than my handicap would suggest (or recommend 😬). Just hope I don't wait 8 weeks for my 225s to need to go through the process again. I wish I could have done a fitting outside on grass to feel turf interaction and see real ball flight.

I suspect that if you are already playing Mizunos you will be comfortable with the soles on the 225s. I like thinner soles (ZX7s play thin due to the V sole) and actually hit the 221 7 iron more solid with similar spin and distance of the 225 7, though the 221 was the Project X LS vs. the Project X LZ on the 225.  Good luck with your new clubs...I suspect you will like them.

I think you will enjoy them. Although the sole may look a little thicker on the 225s it does not play thick if that makes sense. Also the short irons do not have what I’d consider a thick sole.

Q nailed this! I owned a full set of MP20 HMBs for about 5 rounds. The feel, sound, and distance control was never there for me. I have a couple rounds in now with a full set of 225s and can safely say that these are 1000x better than the MP20 HMB. Looks, feel, sound, consistency, and even better through the turf. I was originally thinking about comboing the 221 short irons but I’m so glad I didn’t. The size of the 225s are much sleeker in the short irons also. Beautiful irons in all aspects!

Hmm very interesting. I went from MP-64s to the HMBs and just couldn't get along with them. Looks like they narrowed down the sole and improved the wedge shaping. Main reason I dumped the HMBs was that I was missing too many greens with 8i-PW. I hit the longer irons great.

Hitting PXG gen3T/P now but considering the 225 and maybe the new Forged Tec.

Definitely worth a look! If you liked the long irons you will love the 225 long irons. Check out a full set before you buy if you can. Amazing difference in the short irons.
