Other Barry's Deep Dive 2022 WITB

Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome.

I guess lets start with the bag itself : It's the Sun Mountain 3.5. I like to walk, but I find myself riding more and more since I am a single 95% of the time. So I go with what the group I'm paired up with do. If they ride, I ride, if they walk, I'll walk and this bag lets me do both. I have the bag boy quad (not pictured) that I love and I use that when I play in tourneys since those are notoriously slow.

Driver: New for this year I went with the Ping G410 Plus. Project X Even Flow in X-Stiff. This is not a brag or I'm not trying to, but distance is not a problem for me. I needed something to help with finding fairways and after trying out my brothers 410 on a recent trip, I have become a true believer. I was going to go for the 425, but I could not get over that sound.

Driving Iron: Since I do not carry a 3 or 5 wood I went looking for club that went a specific distance and this P790 2 iron in a HZRDUS smoke black shaft fit the bill. This guy is a rocket launcher when pureed, but if you don't hit the center of the face you're going to pay.

Irons: Srixon ZX7 4-PW with the Modus3 120  shafts. This is my second year playing them and I absolutely love them. I played the 765s for years and this has been an easy transition. I've played longer irons, and I've played shorted ones and I feel Srixon does a really good job of not getting crazy with lofts so my distance control feels well regulated.

Wedges: I carry four wedges in total. Stock Srixon PW, 50 Cleveland RTX4, 56 Callaway MD5 Jaws, and 60 Callaway MD5 Jaws. They all gap really well together and if I need to step on a wedge I feel I can squeeze more out.

Putter: Scotty Cameron Phantom X11. I have been using an Odyssey 2 Ball Ten since last year and while I was recently on the aforementioned golf trip with my brother I spotted this guy in the pro shop at Sand Hollow. I loved the way fit my eye and when i went to grab some beers from the restaurant for the round, I came back and it was sitting in my bag! you can't miss that (IMO) God awful yellow head cover. When i asked my brother what's this all about, he just smiled and said "Happy birthday". Well every putter I have rolled for the past five plus years has had some sort of Super Stroke larger grip on it. This putter does not and I am putting better than I ever had. Maybe we're still in the honeymoon phase, but I'm taking it while I can.

Ball: I play mostly the Callaway Chrome Soft, BUT I rotate in some Vice Pro Plus and Bridgestone's. I really like the Titleist AVX but I have been fading away from them for some reason, not sure exactly why, I wish they were 10 bucks cheaper though. If they ever dropped to 40 for a dozen I'd probably be stocking up.

Headcovers: Driver headcover is from North Berwick in Scotland and it is by far, my favorite course I have ever played. It's the kind of course where you throw the score card out and just enjoy it. If you ever get a chance to play the Old Course, do it. then go play North Berwick. Putter cover is from Pasatiempo. One of my last rounds of golf while living in California and it's everything you want in a course and then some.  The views on TV do not do it justice.

Accessories:  I keep two towels, one for my face (NLU towel) and one for the clubs (Texas flag). It gets pretty hot and humid (not like to south or the Carolinas but still) in North Texas so I like to keep the face towel as dry as possible and the club towel wet enough to clean. I have a bag of the rubber driving range tees incase the course I'm playing at is on mats there's is missing. I have a small "med kit" in a zip lock bag full of band aids, allergy meds, baby powder, Tylenol and Chapstick, this bag comes in handy so often that i have converted a few people to keeping one. That brown leather book is a scoring sheet holder. Once the spring shows up and I start to play, I start keeping track of everything, greens in reg, fairways hit, putts, etc. I always use my Putt-Out on the practice greens. I do not care if I'm the only one there and I have the whole complex to myself, I always use that thing, absolutely LOVE it. The blue sunglass bag is where I keep my tees. I will only play natural wood colored tees, don't know why, I just do. I have a small plastic box that holds my ball markers and divot tools. For the most part I'll use foreign currency, but my wife made me a bunch of ball markers with a pic of my son and me. I love using them, but a, I feel bad if I lose one and b, feel bad that my daughter isn't on there as well so I normally stick to the currency thing, or my Bucees ball marker I made. Finally I have a stretch rope in that black bag. My back is absolute trash, so I not only need a proper warm up, I need to stretch like crazy just to get through the 18.

I think that's about it, feel free to throw in some questions or comments.

Only 13 clubs? Seems like you're leaving something on the table. Why not throw in a 64* wedge just for poops and giggles 🤣!

Honestly I rarely use the 60 as it is and I don't have the need for a 3 or 5 wood. I did mess with my buddies 70 degree once, thought I was going to knock out my teeth!

What type of course are you playing?

I have been lucky enough to play more than my share of bucket list courses and I play a lot of parkland style. I am a longer hitter, but I don't try and over power a course. Learned from my Dad course management suites me more than bomb and gouge. So I have zero problem hitting a 4 iron off the tee then following it with a short iron in. It suits me.
