Low handicap hooks

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone as the title says I am a 4 handicap player from the tips. I am trying to improve my swing and get down to scratch. I have had two swing coaches over the years and am in search of some additional help as my current coach is not available for a while.

My issue currently is a pull hook as I get into my longer clubs.

Issues I know need to be corrected but not sure what needs to happen first and how to go about it. These include issues with my lower body rotation and a slide to start the downswing this I think is causing the loss of angle and hooks as I am blocked off from rotating. It feels like the more we work on holding elbow bend the steeper my shoulders are getting at impact and things are getting worse.

Recent things we have been working on are maintaining more elbow bend at impact by placing a glove under my lead arm and hitting shots without it falling out. As well as Trying to get a straighter trail leg at impact. I feel like there is something else in my backswing that is causing my issues that needs to be addressed rather than forcing something in the downswing.

thank you all for your help and please don't hesitate to offer your advice I would love to hear everyone's thoughts

Setup-1st still

With irons you should preset some shaft lean at setup. This means that your hands should be just off of your inner front thigh at setup

Given that your lead  foot flares out past impact , you should preset your lead foot flare towards the target at setup . This will minimize the amount of front knee bend going back and make it easier to rotate going down At the same time flare out your trail foot away from the target a little  at setup to maximize rotation going back

Now let’s jump to impact - 2nd still

It is clear that your torso and arms are out of synch , with your trail  arm straight  and disconnected from your torso and little right side bend .The reason for this is an incorrect right elbow move in transition .
Notice the first few frames in the enclosed video. His trail elbow is moving faster than the hands in early  transition and his trail elbow is moving towards the target line as it moves down . This is in contrast to your trail elbow move which is moving down at the same speed as your hands WITHOUT also moving out towards the target line
The correct trail elbow move will facilitate the trail elbow being on and in front of your trail hip at impact instead of being behind your right hip

First off thank you for your lengthy response it is very much appreciated! I am unable to open the attached video in your post but I get the idea.i have tried this in the past When I swing this way I am able to get my elbow in the correct position however I always hit the ball with a wide open face. Do I need to offset this move with more lead wrist bow?

Yes, The correct right elbow move will open the clubface

To offset this try

1.slightly stronger left hand grip at setup

2. Slight bowing of the lead wrist during your takeway - this will result in the clubface being more closed in the takeaway.

At first parallel the toe of the clubface will not face up as you currently do, but the face will point slightly to the ground or parallel to your tilted spine

3. more bowing of the lead wrist at the top- But , it is easier to do so earlier  in the swing when fewer actions are happening
