Cutting down a putter

Lord Viking

Recommended Posts

I have a 35" phantom X 7.5

I bought it because the deal was to good to pass up

I took a couple putting lessons and my instructor says it's at least an inch too long....I'm 5-10" in boots (on a good day)

It feels long

1. should I change the weights in the head?  According to scotty camerons website the 35" has 10g weights and the34" has 15g weights

2. Is there a way to save the grip?

I don't thing i want to attempt this myself but if it's fairly simple I might give it a go

SC makes it difficult to change the head weights, you gotta send it in to the custom shop or buy after-market weights. If you want to cut down and maintain the same/similar swing weight without messing with the weights, you can simply install a lighter grip

The Phantom X heads are already quite heavy (I think 355grams at 35”, 10grams added for every inch reduced) so you may not feel the need to increase the weights. Some people find the recent Scotty’s to be too heavy, so they’ll intentionally buy a 35” and cut it down to 34” so they have the lighter weights. All personal preference.

(keep in mind that a half-inch reduction in length is pretty noticeable, trying 34.5” first might be a good idea before cutting to 34”)

A club tech should be able to save the original grip for you

I don’t have personal experience with saving grips, but I’m pretty sure saving a rubber grip is a non-issue for club techs

Saving non-rubber grips can be tricky because you can lose the original structure of the grip (at least that’s what I read on a thread here)

Super easy to save grip and change weight. Cheap weights on ebay and amazon are fine. If you don't know what length you want, go to a store and try 33"/34"/35". Can trim 1/2" if in-between and not sure. Pull the  grip and cut it down(Watch video or find someone local). Add lead tape if you need it and buy the weight you want when you know what it is.

1. Well if it's got stock weights then yes you should, or it will swing weight too low.

2. Yes

I have a Phantom X 11.5 that was 35, now 34.5, and I have a SuperStroke GT Pistol 2.0 (51 grams). Swingweights at like E4 with the original weights (10g, but I also have the 15g's), given the fact that the SS grip is like 30-35 grams lighter than the stock Scotty at 80-85 grams. That weight (85g grip) would make for a lighter swing weight than stock at 34.5 with the 10's vs 15's, but an overall heavier putter. By cutting the putter a 1/2" (thats weight right there), and then going down in grip weight by 30's grams, the swing weight is super heavy, but it does not feel like that as overall the static weight of the putter dropped nearly 40 grams w the 1/2" cut and 51g SS grip. Now if that gets stale, I put in one or both 15g weights, and/or a 25g or 50g counter core weight into the Super Stroke to bring it's weight up to 75 or 100 g's. Tons of options to find that feel. For me the one I play the most is simply the 1/2" cut, with the original 10g weights, and a SS Zynergy 2.0 51g pistol. Swing weight is amazing. All the weights I bought on Amazon, and they work fine and are very accurate. Note that the weight takes a bit of muscle to get out (lie it on the floor for leverage) due to the locktight, so you "may" (one time I did, one time I did not) need to use a blow dryer.

So i went to my local shop the guy was helpful and skilled

He cut the putter down, saved & re-installed the grip....came out perfect

I have some 15g & 20g weights on order from ebay

Things are looking up

You'll want to apply some heat to the original weights before you pull them. They have some Loctite from the factory which breaks free easily with a little heat.
