XXIO 10 hosel design

Ppicked up a xxio 10 clubhead cheap and thought I would reshaft with lightest shaft I can find. I am fairly confident the hosel is a .335 diameter. However, as shown in attached photos, there appears to be a lip inside the hosel that would require a collared ferrule - is that correct? or does that lip require a certain shaft made to fit?

The depth of the hosel to the bottom plug is approx. 1 ".

Any thoughts on the hosel design and/or shaft suggestions/installation will be appreciated.

Collared ferrule. No shaft has a profile like that.

You don't need a collared ferrule. You can just let epoxy fill the gap.

If you have ever done a XXIO head with this hosel, you would know that is not really possibly. You could do that, but you would never get the shaft to center properly. The ones I have done are not .335 shafts. They are .350. If you have a .350 shaft, it is much easier to do, but you need a collared ferrule. If you use a .335 shaft, you have to engineer some sort of shim or ferrule to make this work. I had to do this on two of these heads. Using a .335 shaft, I had to use parts of two ferrules (one was for converting .400 hosels to .335 that I still had) and the other was the top of a .335 ferrule.

Or you can search online for a ferrule for this head.

This is not a .335 hosel. XXIO is about the last one that still used a .350 shaft. Not sure if they still do, but this is one of the .350 heads.

Thank you for all for input. I dont have a proper pair of calipers; however, an 11/32 (.344) drill bit will seat to the hosel plug easily (some play) so a .350 tip must be correct.

Now to hunt for the lightest regular shaft i can afford. 🙂

they are .335" - but shims are really easy to use.

or even create your own shim with drywall mesh or cuttings from an aluminum can.

To build up the shaft where the collar should be, I have used narrow strips of masking tape wrapped around the shaft. This was promoted by a veteran clubmaker on the now defunct ShopTalk clubmaking email list. It works fine for my swing speed.

A shim, ferrule, and buildup as above will make it all a bit complicated. But doable.

There are 350->335 ferrules which include a big collar, at Golfworks for I want to say older Ping woods that were .350. Excuse me while I take a quick look....

OK, here it is. The one on the left in the picture. Probably a slim chance the collar is the right OD, but if it is too small you can wrap it as above, and if too big or too long you can sand or file it. Saves from using a separate shim. Easy peasy, relatively.

Found a 47 gram uncut Speeder Evolution shaft that was cheaper than what it cost to ship it! 🙂

Ready to epoxy. Had to sand the shaft tip and now it fits very snugly (dry locks easily). In fact, since this is first time, I am not sure whether it is too snug for the epoxy layer. Gonna use Brampton quick cure and see what happens. Will test the cure out in a field where if the head flies off, I can find it.

I never followed up but for what it is worth, the shaft and driver went together perfectly, and I have used for the last year. Even made another one just like for an 82-yr old friend whose clubhead speed is 67 mph - he loves it and hits it about 175 carry.

Which Ferrule did you use?
