Hybrid Shaft lengthening - use two same-loft hybrids with different lengths?

Recommended Posts

I am in my late 50s and play to about 11-12.  Another aging guy with a slow swing (about appr. 90 MPH/225-240 and 6-iron/160-165).

I had been fitted into the Apex 21 hybrids (stock shaft in R) two years ago (5H/175, 4H/185-90).  This winter, someone gave me his well-used Sim2 Max 6H (stock Ventus Blue 6-R) that he was going to throw away.  Took some time to get used to it, but I was hitting it 185 to 190 consistently on my club's simulator. That is shockingly long for me.  I could also choke it down an inch or so, and consistently hit about 175, which would allow me to use that 6H to replace my 4H and 5H gamers.

I then picked up a Sim2 Max 5H, expecting to be longer than the 6H. To my surprise, I hit it about the same distance as the 6H.  Then, I noticed that the 6H was about an inch longer than the stock shaft length.  In fact, it is (40.25 inches) actually longer than the stock-length 5H.  It looks to have been tipped about an inch as well.

That got me wondering what would happen if I were to lengthen the 5H another 1/2 inch (essentially 4H length) or, crazier yet, pick up another 6H and lengthen that 1 1/2 (close to the 4H stock length).  Clearly the higher loft of the 6H is helping me launch the ball well.

Has anyone done something like this before?  Thanks in advance.

Your 6h seems to be the hybrid equivalent of a “heavenwood” (ie a seven wood with a longer 4w/5w-length shaft)

I have something similar ie a 30* callaway Bertha hybrid with a longer shaft. Goes similar distance (or longer) than my cobra f7 25* 5h (which has a 5i-equivalent shaft). I carry then as an “either/or”... but usually go with the 5h , as I prefer the security blanket of those baffler rails... but boy does that bertha 6h/7h launch the ball high which is ideal for par3’s ...swing weight is also impacted though, with the longer shaft length! )

I think only you can answer that question, and probably via trial and error. Enjoy the journey.

..p/s... am aware that @Argonne69 does something similar... albeit with his fairway woods (7FW and 9FW , I think? Check his signature in his posts for WITB)
