another Toney Penna question

Recommended Posts

The Toney Penna post a bit ago, sparked a memory....found this Toney Penna Super Eye-O-Matic MacGregor Tourney 4 wood...the sole plate is different than any I've looked at. The grip is an aftermarket Tacki-Mac. The shaft band is red, "MacGregor TrueTemper Tourney " & what looks like a "C" in the circle. From Kaplan's, I'm thinking this is from approx '57ish (more based on the insert & the "Super" designation. The head is black, don't know why it comes across w/redish highlights...at least to my eyes.
It's just the sole plate is different...

Thanks for looking...

That’s a a Macgregor C shaft. The clubs for tournament players had C and they are stiffer than an S300. M85s had C shafts. A very few models had D shafts, which are my favorite, like the M33. The D shaft is closest to an S300. E shafts were between a modern S and R, closer to R I think, and went in M75s.

I think about that all the time. I buy a lot of my clubs in thrift shops, sometimes they still have someones label. I'd love to know how they got to me. Did they have multiple owners? Were they in a bag for years or stuck in a closet since the 50s? Where they just another club or a cherished friend? I wish I had a story for each club.

The only club I have that I know about is my 8802. I got it from a guy in 1983 who I had been paired up with when I showed up as a single. His uncle died in 1965 and had been a golfer. Since the guy I played with was the only person in the family that became a golfer, his aunt had given him his uncle's clubs, which he put in a closet for years. He had decided that day, for the first time, to play a round with his uncle's putter just for fun and had no attachment to it. So the putter was purchased new, played for a year or so, then sat for 20 years until it got one more round and went home with me. It's right behind me in my office still and my son can decide what happens to it when I'm gone.

@Stephen8802 I know what you mean...I've often seen that id band & wondering how a club(s) got from, say New Hampshire, or Virginia, or from wherever to West Central Texas.
There are only 3 sets of clubs that I know their history: my Dad had a full set of pyratone shafted Spalding Bobby Jones Jrs that he got from an older Brother (my GodFather as a matter of fact). I have no memory of him playing any other set. It came to me after his death. My oldest son, when he was a teenager, was playing with them in the backyard & stepped on the putter breaking the shaft (that was a few decades ago). About a decade ago, I gifted that set to a Nephew who is an excellent golfer. I kept the putter, took the head off & put it on an Irish blackthorn cane...I'm an old coot, so I carry that cane/club whenever I play.😂
The 2nd set I know about is a circa '78 Wilson Staff Tour Blade Patty Berg comlete set & bag. I was at a thrift store drop off point when a lady came in with it. I offered to buy it from her right then & there, but we agreed not to deprive the store of $...I told the attendent to get a price on it. The lady told me she'd won the set as a prize in some competition & had never played it. She left before the attendent came back with the price of $40...needless to say it's with me now...a beautiful set in a yellow leather bag.
The 3rd set was the Elder Pro, Odell Trueblood's pro set, irons only, that had just been rechromed prior to his retirement - MacGregor Tourney custom (somewhere in this forum I received information on them)...

History is fun...ain't it

Thanks...any idea what the "C" in a red shaft band indicates?

The special order B chrome shaft was the stiffest of the post 1950 MacGregor shafts along

with it's predecessor -  the pre 1950 NDWS shaft. The pre 1950 NDWS shafts that I have measured

usually come in at S-500 or X-100. C chrome shafts are usually between S-100 and S-300.....
