Cant get low enough to sweep the ground, not getting solid contact.

Recommended Posts

Ive struggled with topping for a while. I eventually fix it for a bit and then it comes back. Im sure there are other faults too, I think see one just by looking at the videos myself. Too shallow on my backswing??

Right now what I an trying to diagnose if not being able to actually even sweep the ground when I swing, Im probably a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch above the ground, so I can at least start making decent contact. I have 2 videos, in the first the first swing is a good example of what's happening.

Second all of the swings I could feel it happening.

I know it sounds like I am sweeping there but I assure you that I am not, if that was on a regular fairway surface I wouldn't be touching the ground.

Is there something else I could submit to make it easier to see?

You have a very short backswing with no width and a lot of sway. Notice how the arms and hands are below the shoulders and you have no shoulder turn. You can't create much power from here. In an attempt to create power, you flip your wrists at the ball, which causes that top. You do a good job of getting recentered in the downswing, but the back swing is basically making your work hard to make good contact and speed in the downswing.

Drill: Stand facing a wall with your arms on your shoulders and turn to wear your left shoulder points at the wall at a 45 degree angle. Then, extend your arms and hands away from your chest. This will give you the feel of where you should be at the top of the backswing. film from behind and from down the line.

There are 3 checks here for the top of a good backswing

1.  a full shoulder turn (to the best of your ability)

2. hands get deeper so u can create power. your arms should be pretty straight in the drill and the hands over your right shoulder.

3. head stays in the center of your stance

Use this photo as a guide.

Ive always had a very army swing and I have a bad tendency even when I do get rotation to start with my arms and not my hips, Ill give that a try. I think what I really need to do is just hit some ball and go really slow making sure I engage my hips first instead of my arms.

I would argue you want to start with your arms. I think you are interpreting an arm swing that is really a shoulder swing, or a shoulder turn. When you get deeper it gives you the ability to start the club down with your arms on a good plane. Then you can rotate through. And yes, start slow and film it. Once you can hit the center of the face doing it slowly, then you can speed up.

My best and simplest advice is rotate in the backswing, DONT ROTATE IN THE DOWNSWING. Yes, in reality you will rotate, of course, but for you, you need to get the feeling of not trying to rotate in the downswing to fix your issues.

The deeper backswing will help a lot. I like how Larry teaches the backswing here. Pause his swing at the top and try to copy where his club is at.

Ok I'm looking this and a few other things. For whatever reason I've always thought I needed to keep my right elbow close to the body. If I let my right elbow move away then I can keep my arm straight and I can hit the ground consistently. Now to try it at the range and see if it actually works. That drill will help.

Yes. You got it. The right elbow needs to come away from the body, to varying amounts for each player, and then moved back into the body early in the downswing. If you keep the elbow into your side in the backswing, then you are basically hitting short pitch shots.
