Go to Putting Drills B4 Tournament/Event

Our member-guest is this weekend and it's match play format, (5) 9 hole matches.  I'd like to get some putting work in to give myself some more confidence going into the weekend and wanted to hear what some people work on.  My go to is the wheel drill starting at 3ft, but I feel like it's 30 min of me getting to maybe 4' and constantly having to re-start because I cannot make 6 in a row.  Are there other drills out there to help make more 3-6' putts that I can work on this week? 

 

Current stats this year are 32.7 putts per round, 73% 2 putt, 22% 1 putt, 5% 3 putt or the 4 putt I had from around 100' yesterday.  My proximity to the hole most days is outside 30'.  I take pretty conservative targets and rarely go at a hole.  Making those 3-5 ft putts usually are to make par, not birdie.  My birdie % this year is 6%.

I hit long 30 footers for about 5-10 minutes...uphill, downhill, flat.

 

The rest of the time I spend on 10' and in, with and without break.  

 

The only drill I do is pace related from 5'-10'...hit several that barely fall over the edge, a few that go in but don't hit the back of the cup, and a few that are firm into the back of the cup.

My suggestion would be to improve the lag putts by pacing off every putt longer than 5'.  I find it comforting to have that # in my head, but it prob will take more than a handful of practice sessions to totally ingrain and/or determine if there is any value to you.

I work on speed only. Even when I show up and have time to warm up putting, I putt to a spot 2' right or left of holes. I work on my speed from 25+ feet, and then I make a few short putts, sometimes to just spots on the green, while also controlling speed.

 

If your speed is good, your reads can follow, and you'll rarely have a stressful second putt.

I work about 20 mins on alignment (hitting my line/aim point) and then work on speed drills for the rest of the time.

This is day of warmup, not practice leading up to the tourney, but one thing I started doing in the last year or so to get ready before the round and create some pressure and fun is to have a putting contest with my partner.  2 balls each, alternate choosing the hole and who putts first, putt both balls out.  Lowest total score wins whatever (a nickel, a dollar, a beer, etc).  For me it seems to add a little "grind" to the warmup and get me a bit more focused than drills, which I now save for true practice.  And the little bit of competition can be fun.
