The golfer’s mind and getting better at golf… usually not aligned.

Hey all- I’m a professional caddie at a club and I find it fascinating how golfers think and the mistakes they make even before they pull the club out of their bag. I’ve been in all facets of the golf industry from Playing, teaching, working in the shop, to now a caddie. (Best job in golf IMO)

 

Anyway, I want to know how you guys on here thing about golf improvement and I’ve randomly put together a short 5 question survey just to see how dedicated golfers think.  If you would take the time to fill it out it would be awesome. I’m genuinely curious to see the answers.

I just looked at the survey and I don’t see the value. The survey boxes you into selecting options that may or may not be true. The survey is implying there is a reason you’re not better. I am better this year than last. I am better this month than last. I am seeing improvement and feel like I am on the right path but it doesn’t happen over night. The only reason I’m not better is because I have not been on the correct path long enough.

I’m a little bit (or a lot) triggered by condescending golf pros who blame struggling students instead of examining their own “mind.”  The mind of a golfer is the mind of a human being, frequently one accomplished in significant areas of endeavor or an athletic one or both, and the ability of golf instructors as a group  (I’m sure there are fine ones out there) to teach such people how to play is less than manifest, to say the least.

 

The major mistake people make is playing golf before they know how to play golf, so by the time they take lessons they have ingrained a poor swing and their ego is invested in it to boot.  They go to a pro and demand change without being willing to admit what they are doing is wrong, or just may not care enough to change.  A lot of people would like to be better but don’t want to turn it into another job, so they are not going to practice or do drills.

 

Personally I think the solution is irons so hard to get in the air people will either learn to use them or quit.
