Steep with lots of hands-next level of improvement

Recommended Posts

Things I have been working on:

1) getting my right hip back and up

2) stretching out my fascia and certain muscles so that I can comfortably maintain a decent length backswing

3) staying down on my back foot longer (I still push up but it's more muted than before)

As far as "physical ability" goes, I scored a 32 handicap on the Titleist Performance Institute golf flexibility and strength test. I definitely have some physical limitations which I am trying to work through. 35 is a complete fail, if that gives you any indication of my status.  I can get my hips through more easily if I revert to a pretty open stance (probably 2" of drop for my left foot).

Things I see in this video:

1) swing is still too steep. How do I get it a bit flatter? More turn? Allowing the club to drop at the top? It's been tough for me to do: I have a tendency to get too quick at the top.

2) My hands look to be releasing too much: my ball goes really, really high sometimes. Should I be doing the whole "hit the ball with the back of your left hand" drill to keep this in check?

3) I am still sliding, although not as much. I'm working on hip flexibility but it's like 3 steps forward, 2.9 steps back. I've never been able to touch my toes, even as a little kid. I'm wound up like a superball; that's always been my build.

Sorry, videos wouldn't embed for some reason.

Two things: Not enough depth in the backswing and sliding forward in the downswing. I recommend you get a bigger wind up with a flatter orientation at the top of the backswing and stop sliding in the downswing. Stay on your right side and let momentum get you onto your left side, especially for driver. The deeper backswing will give you space to release the club and the no-slide will give you space to rotate.

DON'T EVER try to hold the release. If you feel like you have too much release, its because something else is not right. Get deep in that backswing and let the arms and wrists fully release in the downswing. Then we can decide what else to work on. If you don't release it, there's no point in looking for a fix. SEND IT!

Use Ricky's old backswing at the top as a model. You won't actually be that flat, but you want to get closer to where he was in 2020.

Got it, thanks. I got into the habit of flipping awhile back but you are right: get better at the top to make the rest fo the moves more natural.
