Lie angle question

I am looking at a set of irons online that say “Plus 1” & 2 degrees upright”

 

I am reading that for every 1 inch added, it plays 2 degrees upright. 
 

Should I assume that this set will play 2 degrees upright or 4 degrees upright? 
Do I add the 2 together because the length is longer? Or when it says 2 degrees upright is that already taking into account the added length? 
 

I hope this makes sense

First of all - relative changes (2* upright) are meaningless by themselves.  The stock, unadjusted lie angles and lengths can vary across different makes and model clubs.   So +2* upright doesn't tell you what the actual lie angle will be and plus 1" doesn't tell you what the length will be.   It's the actual lie angle and playing length that matters - not how different they might be from the stock.

 

But that aside, the answer depends on - compared to what?   

 

Just because a person might need a longer club doesn't mean they need to change the lie angle because they are longer.   So the +2* upright lie angle at +1" typically means they are still only 2* more upright than a the same club that would have been ordered at the stock length and stock lie angle.

 

Another way to look at it is that they'll play 2* up for someone who normally plays a +1" set but they'll play 4* up for someone who normally plays more standard length set.

 

If you're considering buying a +1" set - are you used to playing a 1" set and are you planing on keeping them at +1"?

 

As an aside - buying a +1" set and cutting them down to standard length can result in potential swing weight problems if the company used "B" weight heads.   So can be problematic.
