"L" stamped on back of hickory iron head

Does an "L" stamped on the back of the  head usually mean it is a Ladies club or?

Affirmative.

Those wishing to hoodwink you sometimes claim it to be 'lightweight', but they would, wouldn't they. Buyer beware.

That said, I have bought woods with an L stamping which, after weighting up (opening up the back cavity and repouring the lead), turned out to be good players.

Because of my infinite wisdom and experience I thought the shaft would be strong enough for the head to take the extra weight.....but it was a risk on particularly desireable playing clubs I was prepared to take. I wouldn't advise it.

Agreed with the Aspidistra... One of my favorite clubs in my bag is a ladies club... I have a Hagen "Iron Man" sand wedge the has the LW stamping on it, designating it as a ladies club.  The swing weight on my ladies version is in the high "F" range and I have heard the mens versions are even heavier.  Many that play these clubs prefer the womans version  due to this, but this is a rare example.   I also have a fantastic Stewart niblick that has the dreaded "L" stamping on it.  I keep that for my loaner bag but it is a great player club also.

Nickc, you are becoming quite the 'old hand' now. Have you joined in with other hickory nuts and played in competition yet?

Not really. I have the set I bought from Chris Homer last year that I played a few times before unfortunately the winter Tees came into force and have played a few times this summer. I can be a bit of a collector / hoarder and this latest acquisition was a bit  of an impulse buy...but the heads are really quite nice to my eye.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone else who plays hickories. The only competition I can see locally is an event called the London Hickory open in October which I might go to..I no longer drive a car but could get to this one by public transport.

The best way to meet like peoplle with a hickory passion is to join the British Golf Collectors Society. Look online.for them.
