Shot Scope Connex (shot tracking tags)

Interesting new launch from Shot Scope - Connex shot tracking tags that work with the mobile app (no connected wearable). The pro is that you get shot tracking and strokes gained data for only $100 and no monthly subscription. The con is that you have to manually select the club you hit with each shot using an RFID and your phone.

 

I'll be interested to see reviews on this and to see whether they offer compatibility with Apple Watch. It would be very competitive with Arccos if I can use my Apple Watch and for far less $$$.

CONNEX performance tracking tags record every shot you hit on the golf course, allowing you to keep your score and collect personalized data as you play. Track your game by simply tapping the club tag against your phone (usually kept in a pocket) before each shot.

Discussed elsewhere as an inexpensive way to get into shot tracking and data collection and analysis. It doesn't replace anything, it is just an alternative. The less expensive the option offered by Shot Scope, the more manual it becomes. I prefer as little interaction as possible, so I can concentrate on my game, and I am very pleased with my X5 watch.

Just got an H4 and haven’t minded the tagging. I wonder how reliable the tagging will be given this uses NFC and not RFID. I just wouldn’t want my phone in my pocket the whole round. Not a bad option for $100 shot tracking though.

Yes. I tried Golf Pad and their app kept dropping out of NFC mode. I would have to take the phone out of my pocket to restart it. Also, sometimes it took several attempts to get the tag recognized. Hopefully, Shot Scope's implementation is better.

I heard back from Shot Scope. It looks like Apple Watch support is not coming anytime soon. Here was their response:

 

You cannot use your Apple watch I'm afraid, you do need to manually tap your tag to your phone for a shot to be detected.
 
This feature is not something we are actively looking into now but in future it may be something we can add.

I just bought the Connex tags and tried using them for a couple rounds. Not really impressed so far.

 

First, I use a counterweight putter grip so the Putter tag doesn't screw in like all the other tags. I don't want to cut off the screw part because I might be returning the tags. Using the manual mode to enter putt location was a bit of a pain, the app was frequently non-responsive to my touch when I tried to indicate my location. Luckily I was playing alone and could pend a few extra minutes fiddling with the app. I might try keeping the tag with me and tapping it when I'm putting next time.  I didn't even try to adjust the pin location.

 

Second, maybe because it's something new, but I forgot to tag my club more than once, and tried to go back and add it later, but couldn't get the app to work right. I also tried doing it on the website, also couldn't figure out how to make the corrections. Also, I'm not sure of the correct way to enter penalty strokes, I didn't really spend too much time on that, but I know there's a way to do it. Also, I noticed the gps location of shots was sometimes way off, showing me in the street or someone's yard when I was still on the course in the rough. LOL

 

On my second attempt, the app crashed mid-way through my round, and I couldn't get it to restart.  It was just stuck trying to load hole 1 when I was already on hole 7. Clearing the cache didn't help.

 

I'll try it 1 or 2 more times, but if I can't get through a full round they're going back.
