Milling out weight from Scotty Cameron NP 2 + plus

I recently picked up a champions choice 2 plus putter. The stock weights for 35’ is 10g. Unfortunately I like a putter that is much lighter than stock for my personal preferences. For reference I use 15’s in my special select NP2, when stock is 35’s.

Would sending this putter into any custom shop to have weight removed affect feel and or performance significantly? I.e. 30 grams of materials removed under the two weight ports 15g under each, vs 5 spread out across the entire head.

Is this project worth undergoing or would I be messing with the balance or MOI of the club too much?

SC makes their putters to be weighted properly depending on the length of the club. If you want to reduce the weight, then just replace the weights with lighter ones. You can purchase them on amazon for 30 some bucks. They also come with the removal tool.

Stock is 10g. I want to remove more than 10 total grams, I currently have 5g and want it lighter than that so I would need to remove material to get comfortable.

Where are you going to remove that weight from?

Probably don't want to mill down the face. Probably can't take much from inside the weight ports or plates.

Do you want visible holes in the bumpers for maybe a few grams?

My plan is to take take it off the bottom of the weight ports and or underneath the sole plate so it isn’t visible to the eye.

Just make sure there is enough metal there to do it, also be aware that could alter sound as well.

See if you can find a shop willing to do the work but no coming back from this especially on resale.

Good idea about materials. There may not be enough to remove any off the sole plate. I got the idea from my special select 2. The champions choice doesn’t have that additional milling and is flat.

I have not tried it without weights. It may work to see how much materials I would like to remove however I would not be happy with that being a long term solution as I like to pay attention to details.

I’m not worried about resale and yes I want to do it to this plus model specifically when my Newport 2 gets acting up.

What do you mean by “pay attention to details”?

If simply removing the weights equals the amount of weight you would like gone from the putter, what’s the issue?

Removing the weights would only net me -20g from stock. I would still like to be closer to the -30g or more range for a total weight of 320g.

350g is for the NP2 plus including stock 10g weights, so 330g is the bare weight without any materials removed.

If I am already doing work to remove materials I might as well go further to give myself margin for future change and so I can have an aesthetically complete putter. That is, as long as that won’t throw off the balance or MOI significantly which brings us back to the initial question.

I’m not really sure what you mean by balance of the club

But look a lighter putter is almost always going to have a lower MOI but that appears to be what you want so I’m not sure why you’re so worried? Your NP2 is probably representative of the moi your CC will go to once you’ve milled the weight out

getting as much weight out as you want from strictly under the weight ports might be tough tho, 30 grams would be 3.75CC you’ll need to remove. To give you context in size one of those weight ports is slightly bigger than 3.75CC.

I should’ve stated swing weight.

I appreciate the new intel on the physical limitations of weight removal. Each side would be 15gs so 1.85CC each still may be a stretch.

Have you tried adding weight under the grip and/or using a heavier grip to achieve the same effective swing weight? Probably not perfect but seems like something worth trying before carving up the club head...

I have not. My lighter NP2 has a Matador but I’m trying to learn to game the stock pistolero for this CC.

This putter is also at 34’ and I normally play 35’. I guess adding extra length would help lighten the putter head feel slightly as well.

It will actually do the opposite. Adding length while keeping everything else the same will increase SW. This is why Scotty uses lighter weights on their putters as the length goes up.

  • 1 month later...

I’m going through this right now. My putter is 34”, and when I remove the weights completely, the feel is perfect. Basically a carbon copy of my Ping.

Obviously I can just leave the weights out, but I would really prefer to have the ports covered and I don’t wish to mess around with trying to change the swingweight.

So this is an option I’m considering.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
