Stuart Cartwright - Hand Path / Handle Pressure Drill

Recommended Posts

I've been watching a few of Stuart's videos over the past week with interest. This one is recent and I thought it was an interesting viewpoint on the hand path and pressure on the handle in the downswing.

I have no reason to question it and had some interesting results when trying it out but as I haven't seen it articulated in this way before I wondered how it is perceived by others in terms of what movement he is isolating and how it might be of benefit....

Thoughts?

I have to say I’m a fan after a couple of range sessions.

that low/left hand exit was a new feel for me- I don’t exactly throw the hands in to out and flip like his examples, but I would  drag the handle across somewhat. The drill has helped me sync up my arms and body better as well

Another fan. This one and his broom videos were really illustrative of a feel I have lacked for a long time - maybe forever. I tend to suffer from toe-deep divots and this feel got more of the heel interacting with the turf and improved the divot pattern and ball flight, with the wedges at least. Makes me think of Dufners waggles.

Between these broom videos and this one below where he demonstrates "thumbs-up" for driver, I cobbled together one of the most amazing rounds of my golf lifetime with this feel. I started it during warm up and kinda focusing on making divots that were more heel-deep if you will (opposed to toe deep which has always been my tendency). Great results and much better divot geometry. It was a little harder to carry over into the longer clubs, but a work in progress. It definitely feels harder to get stuck or leave hands behind me using this thought.

Anyway, my round included a hole-out eagle from 95 yds and my first ever ace from 155.

Hoping this isn't just as fleeting as every other tip/feel I've happened to glom on to 😄

Any handle lowering drills are going to be easier with the short clubs vs the longer clubs because of inertia. Doesn't mean they aren't useful but its harder to work around the physics at the higher speeds.

...ie, do it by P5, not P6.

Interesting problem, but I am not certain about the proposed solution - pushing the hands down.

The problem is that the impact plane is at about the elbow level, but the arms are attached to the body at the shoulder level, under the G force of body rotation, the arms, hands and the club will fly away above the impact plane.  Theoretically, if we could rotate fast enough, the G force would rift the arms from the shoulder sockets.

In my view, the right solution could be seen, if we care to look in the picture below.

To maintain the hands and club on the impact plane through impact, we sequence the clutching of our upper arms to the rib cage, the trail upper arm first followed by the lead upper arm.  I believe this is the better way for impact plane control while we rotate.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
