I purchased the Strackaline book for my home course in summer of 2022. My course was renovated in 2021, so when I originally reached out to them via instagram I asked when their scans had been updated and they let me know everything was done in December of 2021 - so we were good to go.

 

The Book:

 

Overall the book is quality. It is easy to read, the layout of numbers makes sense, and it is simple to calculate yardages from different spots/tees on the course.

 

Green Grid:

 

I really only use the "heat map" green (its quick and easy and the exact numbers of the alternate grid are not helpful to my game - especially with the variety of outside factors at play on any given putt). I mostly use the book on putts where I am unsure of the read or on putts that might only have a very slight break. I will also use it at times just to confirm what I see - which is very helpful with confidence. 

 

The only issue that I have with the book is that there are a number of inaccuracies on the mapping of the greens. About 95% of the mapping is correct but for some reason there is about 5% that is off - in a few cases the green breaks the opposite of what is shown in the book. I reached out to StrackaLine via instagram a few times between July and October of 2022 to let them know about inaccuracies and asking if they had any plan to re-scan the green. Each message was read and never responded to.

 

In February of 2023 I sent them an email stating that the course was renovated in 2021, I had bought a book, letting them know of the inaccuracies, and asking about when the greens were scanned. The response was "we do not have a recent scan of the greens. We hope to have it rescanned in the coming weeks."

 

Overall I like the book. I have made notes as to where some of the slopes are incorrect. At the end of the day I'm little unsure when the greens were actually scanned. Even with the few problems that it has, overall it is a good product and I would buy again.

Great thread! Has anyone here used the Strackaline books to work on their own green reading abilities in practice? I am very interested in picking it up for my home course, but worry the book could become a crux instead of helping me grow my own green reading skills.

 

I'd be interested to hear what drills people have used to improve their own reading skills.
