Fitting to body differences

I'm gonna argue that the floor to wrist fitting chart maybe doesn't fit well. Two players are 6 ft tall with a 38 in floor to wrist. However, player A has a 30 in inseam and player B a 32 inch inseam. Player A has relatively short legs for his torso, more squat. Player B looks 'longer'.

 

Seems to me the difference in the height of the base of the spine precludes the use of the standard fitting chart. Seems to me that the standard fitting chart assumes arm length is directly proportional to spine length. This would mean that the distance from the shoulders to the ball would be the same distance for both players and I don't think this is true. If both players use the same length club, their spine angle would be different at the point of impact.

 

So... is this true or have I just been spending way too much time thinking up excuses? :dntknw:

Floor to wrist and other static measurments can be used as a good jumping off point, but should never be used alone. A good club fit session should cater to the specific tendencies of the player's swing.

 

If you are fitting yourself (probably better to have someone else do it) static measurements should only be used as a guide; they are frequently inaccurate, for many of the reasons you've outlined.

 

Visit your local PGA pro; be sure to ask how much fitting he/she actually does.

I agree. The measurements are a good start, but then its trying the irons, wedges, launch monitor, etc.

Dynamic fitting!!!!!

 

2 players w/ exact same body size can be totally diferent swing style and end up w different spec set up.

Just went through fitting sessions with Joe Spargo in RI. Recommended to shaft +1/2" and 1/2* flat, +1/64 grip, slightly stiffer shaft than my S300s. My 5W will be reshafted to match my 3W. My 5Rescue will be reshafted to match my 4Rescue. My driver was shortened and reweighted. My own thoughts were that I needed weaker shafts 'cause I'm old and grey but numbers were right up there. My 9.5* TP R7 should be about an 8.5* and square, irons should have minimal offset. Just shows to go ya' that conventional wisdom is not all that it's cracked up to be.

 

So, my plan of attack is to practice/play with the adjustments for a while, maybe through June, then check the fitted again and get ALL NEW STUFF.

 

My question was answered correctly by the folks that responded. Nothing replaces proper fitting by a competent clubfitter. Thanks for the advice.
