Srixon ZX4 mkII -ZX5 mkII combo feedback

Hi all,

First post, so thank you in advance for your experience. As the title suggests, I'm looking for some feedback from folks who have blended a set of zx4 and zx5 mkII irons this season. What has been your experience? Which iron/s did you choose to switch from  one to another and what lofts did you finally land on for each?

For reference, I am older, but I can still hit the ball a bit. I got back into the game last couple of years and decided it was time for an upgrade.. I have been hovering around an 8 this year after shaking off the dust.

I've upgraded my bag (except for the putter). My irons are the last to get replaced and am committed to Srixon. I am a lefty. That adds a bit of an complexity because they don't offer a gap wedge. So, real world feedback is most appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Best,

-Chris

Here is a large thread for your reading pleasure.

https://forums.golfwrx.com/topic/1905348-srixon-zx-mkii-irons/

The main issue with the 4/5 combination is that if you change sets between the 5 and 6 irons, you will only have 1.5 degrees of loft differential. The effects vary by individual, but you would need a quality tech / fitter to work with you for optimal performance.

An alternative if you need distance gapping rather than the larger ZX4 head is to go with the stock graphite shaft in the 4 and 5 irons.

For a gap wedge, I’ve found that a conventional model at 50 degrees works very well. The sole configuration on the Cleveland wedge is similar to Srixon’s.

Thanks for the reply and yes, I agree... When I hit them, the 7 iron numbers were basically separated by loft. It's logical that combining the 2 could actually hinder the gaps and not produce the intended effect.

I will read through the thread you provided. as well. I was looking to see how people matched the set, i.e. bend the zx4 6 iron 1 weak, strengthen the zx5's 1 strong, bend the 4's weak to match the 7 iron in zx5, etc. As in all things golf, I am probably just overthinking it...

Overthinking is the fun part 👍

One thing that isn’t obvious is that the Srixon V sole design has a very high bounce angle on the leading edge. I don’t think that the MKII numbers have been posted, but the original ZX5’s was 16 degrees. If the ZX4 is similar, bending them 2 more degrees weak would give me pause.

IMO the ZX5 MKII’s nature removes the majority of need for a  blended set. I brought my MK1 set to a demo. The tech recommended the graphite long iron change over the mixed set.

I have a blended ZX4/ZX5 MK II set.   I went 1 degree weak on the ZX4's for gapping purposes.  Everything works perfect---great irons and I think going 1 degree weak was critical to having nice gaps.   I don't even worry about if I am grabbing a ZX4 or 5--I just grab my 175 iron or my 185 iron etc....

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
