Fix a swing that works?

I've recently gotten used to hitting almost as consistently as I'd like with a slightly adjusted swing which came about when I was trying to fix an over the top swing problem that led to slices and even shanks on real bad ones.

 

My swing has a very flat takeaway/backswing, but at the top of my backswing, it is exactly where it should be. Then the downswing is on the correct plane and I make good contact with the ball. My more normal mis-hits are draws because of the more in to out swingpath, and my once in a while wild misses are shanks or skulled shots.

 

Overall though, I can get a good trajectory on the short irons and lower more penetrating trajectory on the longer irons with this swing. I was told by a teaching pro that my flat takeaway swing should be corrected, but I was wondering, should I fix something that works in order to have a more traditional upright swing? It's not like I'm wrapping the club around my waist or anything...Just flatter than the next guy over. What's the school of thought on this? I mean, Furyk has a crazy swing but it works for him.....

One school is to "fix" everything to "make" it a "model" swing.

 

The other is the "if it ain't broke" theory.

 

For myself, I found I became a MUCH better GOLFER when I realized I was playing GOLF, not GOLF SWING!

Granted you do want to fix the problems that will cause you grief when you are playing under pressure...but otherwise the game is GOLF, and all that matters is what number you card at the end of the day.

I was on a launch monitor today to get a new driver and I am still very very lost on what to get. This launch monitor is what told me that I was hitting a draw everytime...the guy showed me on video why I was hitting draws on the launch monitor also. Maybe I can work a steeper backswing on my tee shots or something? I don't know. I don't want to get in a super bad habit that will be harder to fix down the road since I have just gotten used to swinging flatter to help with slices.

So, you're complaining because you hit draws all the time?

It probably depends on your level of dedication and your willingness to endure a year of frustration. Making a semi-major swing change will almost always produce worse scores for a "LONG" time until your body can get used to it. In Sept. 07 I made some major changes, and after working in front of the mirror every other day, hitting balls twice a week, etc I'm still not back to the hcp I was before the changes. When I hit the ball well I can tell the difference between my old and new swing like night and day. But there are still times where I feel like a clown out there. If you hit the ball consistently and play at a level that you like, I think that focusing more on short game (60 yards and in, pitches, chips, and putts) will produce much more drastic results, and quicker. But if you're in it for the 5 year plan, and willing to have at least a year of frustration (remember it took Tiger a couple of years), then make the change.
