Over the Top, Early Extension, Steep

Recommended Posts

I have been coming across the line for a long time, but the standing up at impact (early extension)is something that has crept in over the past 2 years causing consistency issues, mainly with the driver which I play at 44.75” I think it’s contributing to speed loss as well since I’m down about 8mph is the past 1-2 years, but I’m also 47 and arthritic, so maybe its age. I think the EE developed because I was hurting my hip swinging, so I think my body tried compensating.

I do the same ALT with all my clubs, but the EE is done with my 3&5w as well, just to a lesser degree, and EE diminishes the shorter the club gets.

Any tips or drills to practice that can get me into a better position?

If I try to stay seated and turn around my left hip, I tend to not cover the ball well with any club, I spin out and have impact issues D-PW maybe another swing thought would help?

My driving has gone from really good, to mediocre to sporadic over 2 years time.

I’ve been taking health supplements (anti-inflammatory/ antioxidants) and doing stretches (yoga) with my wife as well as core exercises which has me feeling less limited in my movements.

I will weigh in on this because I have been tackling the EE monster for a couple months now and I think I have learned some useful information.

If you are taking an image of your swing, placing a line on your butt at address, and trying to get back there at the moment of impact, you might start with your setup/posture. Your lower back seems arched, and I believe you want to be more flat at the base of your spine. Doing that, and placing more weight around the balls of your feet, will help, or it has for me.
1 trap I fell into was trying to get my hips to turn back to address position, without turning anything else. Trying to make this major hip movement out ahead of everything else, ahead of the shoulders, caused problems for me. I think if we turn the hips and keep the shoulders somewhat stationary, the hips have to move towards the ball. I have made a lot of progress by starting my downswing with a shift towards the target as I am turning my torso. Getting all the weight to the left and turning at the same time. If my hips are going towards the target, they can’t be going towards the ball. So this move felt more natural and provided real results.

I have a little EE still (from the line on the screen test) but it’s all done on the backswing, and it’s really minor. I think it’s important to remember that my concern is my spine angle, and how it affects my consistency. Getting back to the exact point of address is not the goal.

Anyways, that’s my take. There are much better golfers here than myself that might have better info

I think I’ll put a alignment stick in the ground sticking straight up so it will be in contact with my buttocks at address, so I can try to maintain contact with it while swinging, maybe that will help, although I feel like all my problems begin early, and everything from there is a series of unfortunate events unfolding.

I’m half tempted to get a Prosender training aid to help with my wrist positioning, since I’m across the line so much. I feel if I fix the backswing, everything else will follow.

It's all in the takeaway. You bring the club very low and get the clubhead behind you coming back, which creates the across the line set at the top of the backswing. From that position the only thing you can do is come over the top and try to EE to fix it.

Work on working the club more up the swing plane in the takeaway. It should fix the across the line look at the top of the backswing and give you the chance to come down more on plane. When you start the backswing it should feel like you lift the club straight up. You can use Monte or Dan here.

I’ve seen the teaching in the first video before, which I will incorporate, but the second guy describes me best where you cued the video up around the 7 min mark….

The right shoulder (scapular) is unstable and losing position going back, then I’m compensating

I’ve always been across the line, but nothing like I am now.
