Well I’ve been trying to learn for coming up to 1.5 years now. I’m okay with how my swing is looking but I have limited knowledge of the golf swing, so curious if any errors or opportunities for improvement are sticking out to you? Cheers

It's pretty good. I would say you don't have a lot of depth in the backswing and slide too much in the downswing. I would work on lifting the arms more in the backswing, kind of reaching as far back as you can for power. Then, instead of sliding towards the target in the downswing working on releasing the club more and earlier.

Thanks for the feedback. What you've said makes sense to me - definitely a bit of room to lengthen my backswing. I have also always had a bit of a slide, partially to create power and partially to shift the low point forward I think but should probably work on toning it down.

My biggest question is your comment on releasing the club more and earlier. One of the things I've struggled with the most is an early release, so was just a little curious what you meant there?

Cheers

There's a difference between early release and losing lag. If you have a very straight arm at impact and no shaft lean, you probably released late. If you are hitting fats, you probably have an early release. I don't think in the video you have an early release. I think you need to release earlier.

Okay thanks. To help me understand it might be worth being specific about the definition of 'release'. I originally meant it in the sense of casting, or losing the angle between my forearm and shaft. I believe you are talking about releasing the face of the golf club / rotation of the forearm if I'm not mistaken (otherwise there is no way a late release or 'not casting' could result in no shaft lean at impact)?

If that's correct, then do you mean that because I am not releasing my wrists early enough, I am leaving the club face open at impact and then casting to close the face? I just picked up a club and tried to work it through but I'm getting pretty confused!

Yes, that's right. If the arms and wrists don't release, you can't square the face. You might interpret that as a flick. The casting motion is a correction. It's not the fault of an early release and usually is the opposite, a late release to quickly square the face up.

I've recently discovered this guy and he is really good at instruction. You could look at his explanation. I have one issue with what he says. He says the lob wedge, or shorter irons, should have a later release. I disagree. The release is the same, just the set up in wedges and irons creates that compression and divot. The release point is actually the same for a driver, you just put the ball more forward in your stance to catch the ball on the upward motion of the club in the follow through. Other than that, he is giving a great explanation here.

Here's another one talking about how the release fixes a slice.
