TORCHING SS BLACK OXIDE

Can I torch a putter that has a black ox finish or do I have to remove that finish first?

If you want it to turn turd brown torch it. 
 

If your looking for some other color than turd brown, you have to strip it.

If this is Stainless and black it's not a black oxide finish.  Maybe PVD or cerikote but black oxide is only for carbon steel not SS.  If your putter is a PVD finish you can polish, clean and slowly torch and you may get some rainbow colors.

There are lots of stainless putters done in black oxide. It’s not the best finish on stainless because it looks chalky but it can be done. Black Oxide Services was a go to of mine back in the day.

Never heard of it... and I've been doing custom finishes for 12 years. Sure it's not just SS blackener that has a grey tint to it like the Caswell's? Not trying to be argumentative but no OEM’s use black oxide for SS but I’m sure anythings possible. I’ve used Caswell’s SS blackener and it’s just ok but not nearly as good as PVD or DLC black finishes. 
 Let's see pictures of the stainless with black oxide finish.

Scotty Cameron used their services back in the day on carbon. I never said an OEM used black oxide on stainless. I said lots of putters were done in black oxide. In particular, Cameron Studio Stainless got lots of black oxide refinishing to the point The Cameron Collector created their “aftermarket work” rule because the refinishing didn’t receive an “A” certification.

Yes, I know what BOS is just never heard of Black oxide on SS.  The older carbon steel Camerons were done by BOS in black oxide.  The black finish stainless ones were done in PVD finish by another company if I remember correctly.
