Marking your gloves

to help proper grip

Is it legal to mark your gloves to help get a proper grip? I use a glove for the range that I placed dots on each finger area to help my left hand grip setup.

I don't want to get in the habit of relying on the dots, but it has helped me tremendously on my initial setup when I practice.

Is it okay to wear the same glove when playing? I don't play in any tourney or anything but still want to observe the proper rules.

It is illegal for play. It is considered a training aid.

I could be wrong, but in a recent golf digest, Jim Mclean said it was LEGAL to mark your glove and play.

 

I always thought it was illegal, but this article has me wondering as well.

I don't like to post answers to rules questions unless I can find them in black and white in the rule book.

 

I THINK gloves with markings on them are legal, but I can't find anything about this in the rules or decisions book. I'm hoping someone else has found it and will post as I don't know 100%.

At a recent tournament I was at the group in frint of us had this same issue. We all thought it was illegal. However, an official ruled it legal. I also cannot find it anywhere in the rules to be illegal, but until I hear otherwise I am going to consider it illegal. I don't mark my gloves. but after this post I considered starting to for practice sake.

Well, the best I could do. Rule 14, striking the ball:

 

14-3. Artificial Devices, Unusual Equipment and Unusual Use of Equipment

 

The United States Golf Association (USGA) reserves the right, at any time, to change the Rules relating to artificial devices, unusual equipment and the unusual use of equipment, and make or change the interpretations relating to these Rules.

 

A player in doubt as to whether use of an item would constitute a breach of Rule 14-3 should consult the USGA.

...

 

Except as provided in the Rules, during a stipulated round the player must not use any artificial device or unusual equipment, or use any equipment in an unusual manner:

 

a. That might assist him in making a stroke or in his play; or

b. For the purpose of gauging or measuring distance or conditions that might affect his play; or

c. That might assist him in gripping the club, except that:

 

(i) plain gloves may be worn;

(ii) resin, powder and drying or moisturizing agents may be used; and

(iii) a towel or handkerchief may be wrapped around the grip.

The question becomes, what is a plain glove? There was nothing in the decisions book that I could find to support an answer.

 

I did find in the rules on equipment, that a grip can be marked for hand position, as long as the markings are not felt for position or molded.

 

I would still have to say legal.

It is legal, I have heard it from many pros and I'm sure Golf Digest would of made sure before putting it in that article by Jim Flick.
