Kirkland signature 7 irons vs Callaway edge 10 clubs set or used eBay?

My best friend is playing a set of Callaway irons that are around 15 years old. Driver pretty old also. I keep telling him to buy new or few year old irons as he could use the forgiveness help.

 

At this point I'm sick of pushing him to stop was thinking I'd just buy him some replacements...

 

So there's the question... Staying around the 5 bills which would you recommend?

 

: Kirkland irons look sorta like a p790 copy, but I'm sure ultimately will be an improvement for him. Are they that much better than the Edge clubs set though?

 

: Edge clubs are 6 through wedge, sand wedge, D, 3, hybrid and putter... 

 

: eBay Titleist t300, ping g700, Callaway epic or maverik... I could probably sneak in an older driver, or grab one of my semi older ones and just add it in to the gift...

The only clubs you mentioned I’ve tried are the T300. I had them in a set of rentals I used recently on vacation. I don’t always hit irons I’m not used to well without some range time. I didn’t get any before this round and they were so easy to hit right from hole one. My brother in law I played with felt the same way. If you can get them in the price range they’d be a good choice.

If he has the Diablo Edge irons they are as forgiving as it gets. Absolutely no need for him to change from those unless the flex is way off for his swing.

He has the x20 if I remember right, around 15 years old.

 

I'm debating between used eBay Mavrik or new edge set at Costco at this point... 

 

Probably put him in stiff shafts based on tempo, and his swing speed should be around 95 is my guess.

Awesome thank you. Have been debating between the Callaway Mavrik and edge for my buddy, but I'll see what the Titleist are selling for now used.

Honestly I don't think any new irons will be significantly more forgiving than any X Series Callaway.  

 

You thinking about giving him a $500 gift very generous. 

 

I would suggest forgetting about irons and buy him a Ping G410 driver and G410 hybrid.  The driver is currently $300 and hybrid $200 at TGW.

My vote is buy a set of Ping G or similar game improvement irons on eBay. So many great used sets floating around and $500 is more than enough to build a respectable bag. 
 

I’m not sure I’d be keen to have a set of Kirkland irons in my bag once the novelty wore off.

I may actually just buy that driver for myself. I'm struggling with my Cobra LTD LS ... Just not controlling it well even though I smoke it. Heard the ping is super forgiving with only a small loss of distance...

YMMV but I had the same issue with LTDX LS. On good strikes it would go miles, but the forgiveness wasn't great. I switched to the standard LTDX and lost 5 yards or so on the best strikes, but found so many more fairways. It's the easiest driver I've ever hit. Really is point and shoot.

Prices crumpled on the Cobra drivers, just bought it new for $500 last year and now they're like $160...

 

Still may try the ping, but if I can get a non low spin head or setup I'll give it a test.

Good luck!! That's what I did, too. I traded my LS head with the stock shaft it came with to Mikes Golf Outlet in Hartford, for a standard head in awesome shape. Ended up costing me like 30 bucks. I kept the Ventus Blue Velo that I was gaming, and plugged it into the new head.
