How to remove microfiber cloth from putter

Hi everyone!

 

Had a little misshapen today while torching one of my putters. While still hot I accidentally touched it with a microfiber towel…

 

any idea how to remove it without damaging the surface of the metal?

I would try acetone on a rag.  It shouldn't harm the metal.

Thanks! I’ll try acetone tomorrow. Currently trying some paint stripper that’ll also removes acrylic paint… I’ll wait until tomorrow to see the result. Pretty sure that I’ll need to have it gently reblasted with glassbeads as I tried to scrape some off with a razor…

My first thought was acetone as well, but I have used a microfiber towel with a little acetone to clean other things and I don't think it had any impact on the towel (see the chart mentioned below).  Did you try warming it a bit with your torch to soften the melted towel and wiping it off with a paper towel or cotton towel?  If you get is hot enough it would just burn off, but might leave a stain.

 

Another thought is to try some vinegar.  Micro Fiber towels are polyester/polyamide/nylon blends.  The chart on the link seems to indicate that 100% acetic acid will dissolve nylon and impact polyester.  I have never tired this but cant imagine it would hurt.  However vinegar is not 100% acetic acid:   http://rfelektronik.se/manuals/Datasheets/solventguide.pdf

The paint stripper didn’t work. Currently I’m soaking the entire head in acetone. I will see how that works. While just buying a can of acetone in my local Home Depot, I saw that they also have hydrochloric acid… probably needs to be diluted prior to using it… however I’m not sure if it will not attack the metal…

 

re-heating is also something of what I thought… tried it it with a simple lighter to just get the plastic melt a bit and gently try to scrape if off with a pice of wood. Didn’t help. Not sure about reheating it with a torch…

 

I believe bet would be to beadblast it… just want to avoid removing the fine traces of milling on the bumpers….

Wear leather gloves, get it hot enough to melt, and rub it off with a cotton cloth. Repeat until finished. I would expect any other method to damage the finish.

Careful, that’s dangerous stuff, and will attack the metal.

Yes, I know, that’s why I don’t want to go down that route but rather gently beadblast it if the acetone soaking won’t work. 
 

if beadblasting: does anyone know what PSI to go with and which beads to use?
 

re heating an wiping with a piece of cloth is also something I’d consider…

Quick update: Acetone did not work. However I reapplied some heat and was able to gently remove some of it with a wooden squigie

I did this before.  I just heated the head back up and used very fine steel wool and it came out.

So, here‘s my result. Reheated to use both cotton rag and steelwool to get the most of it off again. However, had to bead blast it…
