Best defeat ever

Played in my first ever 2 day tournament one year after coming back from a 30+ years hiatus.

The tournament was held at Crystal Springs in NJ.

I got permission from my commander in chief to join with the caveat that I come back home instead of staying at the site.

That meant I had to travel back home 2 hours/71 miles one way after day 1 and then do the same thing gong back for day 2.

I had to white-knuckle my drive back to the track in dicey weather and barely made it back with just 15 minutes to spare.

I was surprised that despite the ordeal that I had to go through that I was tied for the lead going into the 18th.

Alas, it wasn't meant to be as I messed up with a double bogey to lose by 2.

But what stood out to me about this loss was that I lost to someone who only had one leg and had a prosthesis on the other.

This guy was also a good guy and what's even more outstanding is that golf is not his best sport.

He is an excellent bowler, having completed a couple of perfect 300 games.

I admit this loss stung a bit but I was more amazed that I got beaten by a guy who has a significant handicap.

I used to play with an ex SEAL that lost his left leg above the knee due to an aneurysm. He was a great player when he had two legs, and was working his way back to becoming a good player. Our bunkers were in terrible shape, and scheduled for a renovation when he hit into a very large bunker on number 8. I mentioned to another guy in the group that he might have a tough time getting in and out of the bunker. He just drove the cart into the bunker, and hit his shot on the green. The bunkers were so bad he couldn’t do any damage, and we cracked up when we saw it. Unfortunately, other health issues caught up with him, and he is no longer with us. He was a unique individual to say the least.
