What & How ?
I'm sure that many of us have had cuts and bruises over the years. Let's hear about your sports related injuries. How they happened? What sport? Surgery? Rehab? etc. Have they really affected the golf game?

Man, you've had it rough! Mine aren't too bad:

Cracked rib (baseball)

Torn right supraspinatus tendon - rotator cuff (Skiing - couldn't play golf for 5 years after) went through physical therapy but no surgury.

Sprained left knee and ankle (Skiing - took 9 months to fully recover)

Cracked left eye orbital bone & torn sinus (Softball)

Broken 1st knuckle on my right index finger (Bike racing)

Broken 1st knuckle on my right pinky finger - Boxer's fracture (drunken bar fight, lol)

Currently going through physical therapy for left quadriceps tendonitis and a slightly separated left shoulder A/C joint (both brought on by golf I think), which have greatly hampered my golf, but I'm finally swinging pain free in the last few days.

Is this like the Robert Shaw/Richard Dreyfuss thing in Jaws? :yess:

Climbing has resulted in: a fractured skull, broken ribs, collapsed lung, snapped collarbone and a rotator cuff injury that required surgery and took a while to sort itself out.

All the above mercifully didn't result in too much disruption to my career, golf or general lifestyle, thankfully; albeit the shoulder wasn't 100% for a long time afterwards.

Hockey was a game we were forced to play in my schooldays. I always made a beeline for the goal - and the big stack of pads that was hehind it...

I'm currently sidelined from the game following some back surgery for a distinctly non-sporting complaint. Bah.

Many minor injuries accumulated through years of baseball, basketball, and football.

The worst, career ender was:

Torn AC and SC ligaments in my right shoulder

Cracked Clavicle

Torn Rotator

Grade 3 Seperation

All in one tackle, I wish I could use the old, "you should see the other guy"

This has left my shoulder 1 1/2 in. out of socket and unable to surgically repair if i ever want to raise my arm above my shoulder. Rehab has helped quite a bit, if i try to throw a ball or swing a club I usually have to warm up for about half an hour before my shoulder settles into place without constantly clicking.

started playing golf my first year out of college so i cant really compare to how it would have been before the injury.

Wow, you guys are pretty beat up!

Mine's not too bad, but might just take the cake for being the strangest.

My sophomore year of high school i had a strained right quad from soccer, and the doctor I went to put me on a high dose of Motrin for the pain. Well, apparently I had some sort of reaction to it due to the huge amount I was taking, and it ended up literally eating away at the lining of my esophagus (sp?) and stomach. I had a lovely few months of pain from the several stomach ulcers and erosions in my stomach. I ended up missing 45 days of school and had a boatload of work to make up.

Not only that, but the doctor said that I'll be experiencing pain on and off for a LONG time.

  • 2 months later...

i feel like l'm sitting around in the cabin of the orca - me, hooper, quint and sheriff brody

".....You know that was the time I was most frightened... waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb."

i've had countless casts (approaching evel kneivel levels), three significant surgeries (torn rotator cuff/upper biceps tendon, two torn ligaments in my left wrist and a heel problem).....and, even though i'm relatively young and in very good shape, i'm playing out the string until i get my right hip replaced. thousands and thousands of hours of basketball has taken it's toll on my hips. the left one will need replacing too, but the right one is the more pressing situation at this point.

More than most but less than some, Rugby and Aussie Rules have given me:

Separated ACJ in both shoulders

Broken toe

Broken Wrist (I got a totally undeserved reputation as a hard man for playing on. I didn't know it was broken!)

Right knee: Complete rupture of ACL, MCL and bucket handle tear of meniscii and some associated nerve damage.

More stitches than I can count (including a huge gash from surfing). I hate to think of the amount of claret I have spilt over the playing fields of southern England.

God bless modern medicine as I have no sequelae from any of these (bar my knee being a little stiff if I sit in the same position for a couple of hours) but golf is now my major contact sport!

..and seriously Matt, you never heard of ropes!?

Although the belay undoubtedly saved my life, it's not much help when you've goofed and end up hitting a big lump of rock awkwardly on the way down...

I was young and inexperienced at the time... :D

In fairness I came off quite well really, with no real lasting damage - albeit the ribs were quite stunningly painful and the shoulder wasn't great for a while. I saw someone take a plummet and sustain a compound fracture of his left forearm though - complete with nice gleaming white bone sticking out of a big tear. One lad, not considered to have a particularly weak constitution, literally came apart when he laid eyes on it and ended up rather ill just from the sight...

Luckily none of my dogs were about at the time or else they'd have been munching on it like hounds posessed. :D

Ok Quint,

Football - Dislocated elbow (rehab)

Mountain Biking - Torn PCL, did an endo going 30mph (surgery)

Basketball - meniscal tears and cartilage tears (3 scopes)

Snowboarding - Grade 3 shoulder separation (surgery)

Softball - ulnar collateral ligament tear (scope)

Sindy (not with a C) - broken heart, Las Vegas (18 year old Scotch)

What sucks is I need to have my elbow scoped out again in 2 weeks to remove some "loose bodies". So I can't swing for at least 6 weeks. I'm pretty much a wreck but I still love to play golf.

I hit a pw from 130 on a goat ranch course last year ,,,,, ball landed about 8 feet from the hole. My last 2 fingers on my left hand went numb and sharp pains shooting through my hand. I thought I had just sprained it. Well the next morning after a night of ice, it was no better. Went to the sports medicine place,,, they took x rays. Guy came back, again I was expecting a sprain. He says u can either wear a cast for 16 weeks and it might heal or you can have surgery and have the bone fragment removed. Turns out I had broke THE HOOK OF THE HAMMATE Bone that is in your wrist. Guy said it was common in baseball players and golfers,,,, I had never heard of it. Turns out the guy who won the amateur 2 years ago or last year had the same thing, he has had a hard time getting over it. I had surgery and mine has heeled fine. I was wondering if I would ever be able to play again and also wondering how I was gonna tell all my macho buddies that I broke my wrist hitting a golf ball, lol.
