Wear Spot -> Shaft Fit Question

Gents,

 

Need some input from a group that is smarter than me as it relates to shaft fitting. My old 3 wood is a Mavrik Sub Zero with a fixed hosel and a Aldila White Stiff flex 70g shaft. Club was a weapon off the tee, I hit low penetrating shots that rolled out forever, which is great for tee shots but not so good for shots into greens (I know the sub zero was meant to be a low launching head). My dispersion was below average and the shaft felt a bit loose to me, but I found the middle of the club face very consistently. It is hard to tell from the picture, but you could put a quarter over the wear spot. 

 

Last year I upgraded to a TSR3 and was fit into the AD DI in X Flex.  Driver swing speed is 110-115 for reference. I have the hosel cranked up to A4, which is getting me more height than the old sub zero, and the dispersion is tighter than the old club, but I am not hitting the ball nearly as consistently. The wear spot seems to be almost twice as wide than the sub zero / Aldila.

 

TLDR: Old Club hit pure and wider dispersion vs New Club tighter dispersion but less consistent ball striking. 

 

The question for you shaft experts is this: Was the Aldila a better fit for me since my ball striking so much more consistent than with the AD DI, and I should just look to move to a X Flex to tighten the dispersion? I know I can get an adjustable or higher launching head to address the height issue (or a 5 wood).

Bump. Not sure why this question was moved to this forum but would appreciate any thoughts. I am looking at a g425 3 wood and there is an option for the Rogue white in a X flex, so wondering if I should pull the trigger based on my prior experience with the S flex. Thanks.

If you still have the old Callaway club, buy a new adapter for your Titleist fairway, and go get the old shaft pulled from the Callaway tip and install it on a new Titleist tip to see if your contact is more consistent with the higher ball flight.

there are so many potential reasons as to why you are less consistent. Different heads, shaft flexes, shaft profile, swingweights, grips (?). I think I'm the majority when I say: if you find a unicorn three wood; never abandon or get rid of it. 

 

In any case, I think you should go through the following (to the letter):

 

 

with the new three wood and see if you can get a set up where you have more consistent face contact.

It's possible but not necessarily the only reason the face impact pattern could have been better.

 

Howard's tutorial can help you tune in the shaft weight, playing length and swing weight to get the best fit for those specs.  Only then should you start looking at other stiffness profiles or flexes (all the while keeping the first 3 specs unchanged).   That will tell you how much the stiffness profile might influence the face impact pattern for you and your swing.
